
Amerks edge IceHogs, 5-4

(Rochester, November 16)... The Rochester Americans skated to a 5-4 victory over the Rockford IceHogs Friday night at The Blue Cross Arena in front of a crowd of 8,452. The Amerks' offense was led by forwards Stefan Meyer and Rob Globke. Meyer had two goals and an assist, while Globke chipped in with two goals. Forward Anthony Stewart scored one goal and had one assist. Netminder David Shantz earned his first win of the season as he made 31 saves in goal for the Amerks.
The IceHogs offense was led by forward Martin St. Pierre. St. Pierre scored one goal and had two helpers. Colin Fraser, Bryan Bickell, and Cam Barker each scored a goal for the IceHogs. Goaltender Wade Flaherty was pulled from the game in the first period after allowing three goals on five shots in just over nine minutes. Corey Crawford took over for Flaherty and made 14 saves in net for the IceHogs.
The Amerks jumped out to an early 3-0 lead when Globke and Meyer each scored on the power play. Globke made it 1-0 just 3:45 into the first frame, when he buried the puck in the back of the net after receiving a pass from Stewert and Andrej Sekera. Meyer made it 2-0 just under three minutes later on the power-play, one timing a pass from Mark Mancari. Marc-Andre Gragnani was also credited with an assist on the goal. Globke scored his second goal of the night when he found the back of the net at 9:11 in the first period. Meyer and Franklin MacDonald each earned an assist on the goal.
The IceHogs came battling back to make it 3-2 at the end of the first period. St. Pierre connected on a pass from Kris Versteeg, while Fraser scored from St. Pierre and Mike Blunden.
Meyer scored his second goal of the night on the power play 7:26 into the second period on a pass from Dylan Hunter and Mancari. Stewart helped cushion the Amerks lead by three goals when he slid the puck through Crawford's legs 13:10 into the second period. Mike Weber and Martin Lojek chipped in with the helpers.
Bickell scored just 30 seconds into the third period cutting the Amerks' lead to 5-3. Versteeg and St. Pierre collected assists on the early goal. Barker then scored 11:40 into the final frame to bring the IceHogs within one goal.
The Amerks were able to hold off the IceHogs attack during the remainder of the game to secure the 5-4 win.
The Amerks return to action Wednesday, November 21st, when they take on the Manitoba Moose at the Blue Cross Arena. The 7:05 p.m. contest will be broadcast live on Hot Talk 1280 WHTK, whtk.com and B2 networks.
