Amarillo Gorillas News Release

Rio Rancho, New Mexico 2/12/08 - The Amarillo Gorillas had their season best five game winning streak broken on Tuesday night, losing to the New Mexico Scorpions by a final score of 3-1. The Gorillas also had a four game win streak over the Scorpions broken, including three straight at the Santa Ana Star Center. New Mexico put up 60 shots in the contest, the most yielded by Amarillo all season long. Despite goaltender Dan McWhinney's stellar performance, the Gorillas could not take advantage and multiple penalties against in the third period would prove too much to overcome.

The game was tied at 1-1 off two early goals from Amarillo's Jason Chafe and New Mexico's Chris Robertson, and would stay that way until the third period when Vladimir Hartinger scored at 4:22 to put New Mexico on top for good. Amarillo could only muster five shots in the third, as their comeback efforts fell short due in large part to repeated trips to the penalty box. The Gorillas were called for eight penalties in the third period, and Robertson would tally an empty net goal, his second of the game, at 19:57 to seal the game for the Scorpions.

Amarillo was out-shot in the contest 60-18, managing just nine shots in the first period, four in the second and five in the final frame. Amarillo went 0-6 on the power-play, while New Mexico went 2-13. The Gorillas could not gain any ground on the inactive Austin Ice Bats and Corpus Christi Rayz in the three-way race for the fifth and final playoff spot in the Southern Conference. Amarillo has a game in hand on both teams still, trailing Austin by one point and tied with Corpus.

The Gorillas will continue their road-trip tomorrow night with a game against the Arizona Sundogs, set to start at 8:05 PM CST.
