Amarillo Wins Second Consecutive Performance of the Week Award
February 12, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Amarillo Gorillas News Release
Amarillo, TX 2/12/08 - The Amarillo Gorillas and the Central Hockey League announced today that Amarillo's nine goal outburst against the Odessa Jackalopes on January 29th has been voted as the CHL Performance of the Week. The award is the second in a row given to the Gorillas, after Bill Vandermeer was recognized last week for his 6 point performance against the New Mexico Scorpions on January 26th. The Performance of the Week award is voted on by fans via the CHL's website - www.centralhockeyleague.com. The Gorillas narrowly escaped with the award, receiving 37% of the overall vote (645 total), just slipping past Odessa's Sebastian Thinel who scored two goals on February 2nd to become the Jackalopes all-time leading goal scorer and garnered 35% of the overall vote.
In their 9-5 rout of the Jackalopes last week, Amarillo set a team season high for goals (9), assists (16), points (25) and +/- (+18). The Gorillas had big games from Bill Vandermeer (2-2-4), Chris Lipsett (2-1-3), Grant Selinger (1-2-3), Chris Martini (1-2-3) and Austin Sutter (1-2-3). It was the third straight win on Amarillo's current five game winning streak.
In the contest, Amarillo extracted some revenge on goaltender Alexandre Vincent, as they were able to chase him from the net scoring goals on their first three shots of the game. Prior to this contest, Vincent had shut out the Gorillas twice, and given up just six goals in five previous starts against them. Vincent was replaced by Mike Gorman, who proceeded to give up six more goals on 30 shots faced. Aiding the Gorillas cause was their power-play unit, which finished 3-7 in the game.
So far, Amarillo has received five awards from the league this season, especially in the past two weeks -
David Nimmo - Player of the Week for Dec. 10th - Dec. 16th
David Nimmo - Player of the Month for December
Bill Vandermeer - Player of the Week for Jan. 28th - Feb. 3rd
Bill Vandermeer - Performance of the Week - Jan 26th
Team - Performance of the Week for 9 goal outing against Odessa - Jan 29th
The Gorillas will try to extend their season-best five game win streak tonight against the New Mexico Scorpions. Game time is set for 8:15 PM CST at the Santa Ana Star Center.
