Split with the Kings, Return to Second Place

The Hounds were able to get a split in their final three game series with the Mississippi RiverKings. The Kings dominated Friday night's game by scoring five unanswered goals en route to a 5-1 win. Saturday night was more of the traditional Hounds vs. Kings match-ups that fans are used to seeing as both teams alternated rallies with the Kings taking a 5-3 lead late into the third period. Bryan Lachapelle scored with 45 seconds left to tie the game at five and force overtime and an eventual shootout. The Kings won the shootout 3-1 to take the game 6-5. Sunday afternoon Kevin Beech made his SteelHounds debut in net and led the Hounds to their first shutout of the year as he made 38 saves on 38 shots as the Hounds won the game 4-0. Joel Irving had two goals and an assist in the win for Youngstown.

What's on Tap: Finish the Stand against the Blazers

The Hounds eight game home stand will conclude this weekend as the Oklahoma City Blazers come to town for a three game series starting on Friday night. The Hounds have bested the Blazers twice this season with the Hounds coming back from a 3-1 first period deficit to win 4-3 in a shootout on February 2nd. Youngstown is 2-2-1 during this stretch that just saw them play five games in six days. Oklahoma City is 19-21-6 (44 points) and are 12 points back of Mississippi for the fifth and final playoff spot. The Hounds have a plethora of promotions happening all weekend long. Friday night is "Fan Appreciation Friday" with $1.00 beers available to everyone 21 years and older. Saturday night the first 1,500 fans will receive a SteelHounds rally towel. Also it is "My Big Fat Youngstown Wedding On Ice" as couples will get married and renew their vows right on the ice. Both games start at 7:05 with the Hounds wearing special pink jerseys that will be auctioned off following Saturday night's game. Sunday afternoon is a 4:05 start with fans receiving Rick Nash wristbands. Fans are also encouraged to bring their skates as they can skate with the Hounds after the game. Two More Up to the AHL

The SteelHounds have had two players called up to the American Hockey League in the last five days. Rookie forward Kirill Starkov was called up by the Syracuse Crunch on Wednesday the 6th and defenseman Milan Maslonka was called up earlier today by the Albany River Rats. Starkov, 20, was the sixth round draft pick (#189) for the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. In 25 games for Youngstown the rookie from Yekaterinburg, Russia has 10 goals and 12 assists. Of his 22 points, seven have come on a current four game point streak. He also has a three game goal scoring streak for the Hounds. Prior to coming to Youngstown he played eight games for the Elmira Jackals of the ECHL. The Syracuse Crunch are the top affiliate of the Columbus Blue Jackets of the National Hockey League. Maslonka, 21, is a second year pro originally from Zvolen, Slovakia. The 6-6, 245-pound defenseman was acquired by Youngstown last season after starting his professional career with the Elmira Jackals of the United Hockey League. In 39 games with Youngstown this season he accumulated three goals, four assists and 210 penalty minutes. In 67 total games with the SteelHounds he has amassed 14 points and 343 penalty minutes. The Albany River Rats are the top affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes of the NHL.

Player Moves

The Hounds had several player moves last week. Head Coach Kevin Kaminski announced that the team had signed forward Anthony Becker, re-signed defenseman Andrew Scampoli and traded forward Mark Johnson to the Odessa Jackalopes for future considerations. Becker, 22, is a second year pro originally from North Tonawanda, New York. He started the season with the Jacksonville Barracudas of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) recording four assists in five games before moving to the Indiana Ice Miners of the Mid Atlantic Hockey League (MAHL). In nine games with the Ice Miners he has 11 goals and four assists. The 5-11, 173-pound forward started his pro career with the Pee Dee Cyclones of the SPHL recording six goals and two assists in 22 games during the 2006-07 season. Scampoli, 22, joined the Hounds for the third time this season over the weekend. Scampoli skated with the SteelHounds for five games in January scoring one goal and accumulating four penalty minutes. The Islip, New York native began his rookie season with the Indiana Ice Miners of the Mid Atlantic Hockey League posting five goals and 20 assists in 25 games. Johnson, 22, is a second year pro who accumulated five goals, five assists and 54 penalty minutes in 32 games. The native of Glencoe, Ontario played his first 89 professional games as a SteelHound recording 12 goals, 14 assists and 165 penalty minutes.

Trade Deadline Moves

The Central Hockey League trade deadline was Monday and the Hounds did make one move as they acquired defenseman David Simoes from the New Mexico Scorpions. Simoes, 22, is a rookie originally from Vanderhoof, British Columbia. In 45 games for the Scorpions he accumulated one goal, five assists and 146 penalty minutes. He has amassed a +8 +/- rating. Prior to turning professional he played four years in the British Columbia Hockey League.
