Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska â The Alaska Aces scored early and often Tuesday night, chasing San Diego goaltender Trevor Koenig and sending the Gulls to their worst defeat in club history with an 8-1 shellacking in front of 3,062 at Sullivan Arena.
San Diego actually registered the game's first six shots on goal, but when Charles Linglet banked Alaska's first shot off Koenig and into the back of the net at the 7:12 mark of the first period, an ominous tone was set for the visitors. Valdemar Pelikovsky and Joe Talbot scored the first two of four power play goals for the Aces 46 seconds apart later in the frame, and the Gulls bolted for the dressing room trailing 3-0.
Mark Pederson lifted San Diego to within 3-1 at 2:32 of the second period, scoring a power play goal, and when the Gulls killed off two more opportunities for Alaska with the man advantage, the game's momentum seemed to be shifting. But the quick-striking Aces suddenly opened up a 5-1 lead with two goals in a span of 1:26 midway through the period, Talbot's second of the night and a rebound by Kimbi Daniels, who had set up the Talbot goal by banking the puck off the back of the net directly to himself and then feeding Talbot in front. Wes Dorey rifled home a loose puck in front with 34 seconds left in the frame, extending the bulge to five goals and making Koenig's appearance for the third period unnecessary. The two-time WCHL Goaltender of the year departed with only 12 saves on 18 shots.
Lance Mayes started in net for Alaska and stopped 29 of the 30 shots he faced. With the Aces on another five-on-three power play midway through the final period, Dorey's second of the night at 9:58 and Mike Scott's team-leading seventh of the year 32 seconds later capped the scoring and gave Mayes his second win without a loss. In three appearances, the rookie out of UA-Fairbanks has stopped 66 of 68 shots.
Alaska (6-4) remains in a third-place tie in the Pacific Division standings with Fresno, who beat Texas in Beaumont. San Diego, which dropped its second straight and to 3-3-1 overall, will attempt to gain a measure of revenge in tomorrow night's rematch in Sullivan Arena at 7:00 p.m. All Aces games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.alaskaaces.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
