San Diego Gulls News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska â "Don't hit anybody." That was Steve Martinson's message Wednesday night. His San Diego Gulls followed orders, which helped defensively. But offensively it was still a struggle as the Alaska Aces shutout the snake-bit Blue and Orange, 3-0.
Martinson has probably never uttered those words in his entire nine-year coaching stint with the Gulls. But after his troops were shorthanded 12 times Tuesday, not hitting anyone was the most logical answer. Or so it would seem...
San Diego indeed kept its cool, allowing only three power plays to an Anchorage team that connected four times on the man advantage Tuesday. But defense wasn't the problem Wednesday. It was the hot goaltending of Dan Murphy that handed the Gulls their third straight loss.
The Gulls (3-4-1) couldn't play much better in the opening period. They had four power play chances and out-shot Alaska 13-2, but had nothing to show for it. The Aces (7-4-0) rode the stingy goaltending of Murphy, then drew first blood 1:24 into the second.
Joe Talbot took the puck out of the corner and centered a pass to Charles Linglet driving down the wing. Linglet drew Gulls goaltender David Burleigh out of position, then slid a pass to Kimbi Daniels, who tapped it into the empty net. It was Daniels' third goal of the year and second in as many nights.
The Aces took a 2-0 lead at 18:15 of the middle frame on Talbot's seventh goal of the season. After a scramble in front of the San Diego net, Talbot dug the puck out and flipped it over an out-stretched Burleigh. It was Talbot's seventh goal of the season and third in the two-game series.
Murphy continued to shutdown San Diego in the second and third, thanks to a handful of clutch point-blank saves. The Alaska netminder finished the game with 30 saves. Burleigh stopped 18 shots, but suffered the hard-luck loss.
The Gulls pulled Burleigh late in the game, but Chris Lipsett's empty-netter with 30 seconds left was all she wrote.
Notes: The Gulls have scored 13 goals in their three wins. They've scored five goals in their five losses (which includes an overtime loss)... San Diego has been shorthanded 61 times already this season â almost eight times per game... The Gulls have allowed five power-play goals on 25 chances during the last three games. They've scored twice with 26 man advantages during the same stretch... Billy Tibbetts is expected to miss the next three to five weeks with a fractured wrist... Dennis Purdie still needs five more points for 500 in his pro career... The Gulls are 57-16-4 all-time against the Aces...
San Diego's road trip continues Friday in Bakersfield and concludes Saturday in Long Beach. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m. The Gulls return home to face the Fresno Falcons Wednesday Nov. 19 in a rematch of last season's Taylor Cup Finals. All games can be heard on KPOP 1360AM with Chris Ello calling the play-by-play. The Gulls' Internet radio show, hosted by Tera Black and Jeremy Zager on wsradio.com, will begin airing biweekly soon. Stay tuned for more details.
