Gulls - Aces Game Preview
November 12, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska â It's a brand new day, and whatever happened last night is in the past... But don't think for a second that Steve Martinson and company have forgotten what took place at Sullivan Arena Tuesday night.
The Gulls arrived in Anchorage late Monday after a voyage that even the "Gilligan's Island" crew would be proud of. But it was more like a 10-hour tour. The Gulls bused from San Diego to Los Angeles in the morning before flying to Anchorage via Salt Lake City. Yes, Salt Lake City, Utah. Just a tad out of the way. So needless to say, it was a long day. Not to make excuses or anything.
But that wasn't half as bad as what took place on the Sullivan Arena ice last night. The Alaska Aces scored four power-play goals, two coming on a two-man advantage, en route to pummeling the Gulls 8-1. The seven-goal loss tied a franchise record. San Diego also lost 8-1 in Fresno two seasons ago.
Now to the good news... The Gulls get to start all over tonight...
San Diego, now losers of two straight overall and three straight on the road, begin the day with seven points, tied for last in the Pacific Division. The Blue and Orange have still played the fewest games in the ECHL however.
Special teams have killed the Gulls in their last two games. They've allowed five power-play goals in 22 chances while scoring twice with 19 man advantages. They've also allowed a shorthanded goal to boot.
The Aces, who finished 25 games under .500 last season, are off to their best start in five years. They begin the day with 12 points, tied for third in the Pacific Division. Mike Scott leads the club with 13 points, which places him 15th in the ECHL. Mark Smith has 12 points while three others are tied with 11 points.
Lance Mayes, who started last night's game, is 2-0-0 with a league-best 0.84 goals-against-average and .971 save percentage. Dan Murphy, the No. 1 goalie, has seen the most action, posting a 4-4-0 record with a 3.05 GAA.
This is the second of 10 meetings between the two former West Coast Hockey League rivals. Alaska is 5-2-0 at home while the Gulls are 1-2-1 on the road. San Diego leads the all-time series with a 57-15-4 mark.
