San Diego Gulls News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska â The San Diego Gulls got into penalty trouble again... The Alaska Aces have one of the best power plays... Not a good combination if you're a Gulls fan...
Alaska scored four times on the power play, including twice with a two-man advantage, en route to embarrassing San Diego 8-1 Tuesday night at Sullivan Arena. The seven-goal loss ties a franchise a record. San Diego also lost 8-1 to Fresno in 2001-02.
It all started with Alaska's three-goal barrage in the first period. Charles Linglet, Valdemar Pelikovsky and Joe Talbot all scored in the opening frame. Pelikovsky and Talbot's goals came on the power play just 46 seconds apart.
Linglet got things going 7:12 into the game on the Aces' first shot. Then Pelikovsky scored at 15:29 with Alaska on a two-man advantage. Talbot capped the first period scoring with another power-play goal at 16:15, finishing off a 2-on-1 rush with Wes Dorey.
The Gulls (3-3-1) got on the board early in the second period on a power-play goal from Mark Pederson. But that's as close as they would get as Alaska (6-4-0) scored three more times in the second to put the game out of reach.
Talbot notched his second of the game â sixth of the season â at 8:20 before Kimbi Daniels put one home 1:46 later Dorey tacked on another at 19:26 to give the Aces a 6-1 lead.
The Aces weren't done however as they netted two more in the third. Dorey bagged his second of the game â fourth of the season at 9:58 â with Alaska on another two-man advantage. Mike Scott got the fourth power-play marker 32 seconds later.
Koenig, who was relieved by David Burleigh in the third period, stopped 12 of 18 shots. It was only the fourth time in his Gulls career that he's allowed six goals. Lance Mayes went all the way for the Aces, finishing with 28 saves.
Notes: Gulls leading scorer Billy Tibbetts will miss the next three to five weeks with a fractured wrist. He suffered the injury in the third period of Saturday's game after being slashed by Florida's Stuart Pietersma... Igor Pohanka, assigned by the NHL's Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, made his Gulls debut... The Gulls have now raised $9,325 for the San Diego wildfire victims... Dennis Purdie, who assisted on Pederson's goal, now needs five more points for 500 in his pro career... Head coach Steve Martinson still needs 12 more wins for 400 all-time... San Diego is 57-15-4 all-time against the Aces, which includes West Coast Hockey League play (1995/96 â 2002/03)...
San Diego's road trip continues Wednesday in Anchorage, with game time scheduled for 8 p.m. (PST). The Gulls play in Bakersfield Friday and Long Beach Saturday, with both of those contests starting at 7 p.m. (PST). All games can be heard on KPOP 1360AM with Chris Ello calling the play-by-play. The Gulls' Internet radio show, hosted by Tera Black and Jeremy Zager on wsradio.com, will begin airing biweekly soon. Stay tuned for more details.
