Akron RubberDucks News Release
Jordan Smith bounced a two-out, infield single up the middle with the bases loaded in the top of the 13th inning Saturday night, driving in the go-ahead run in a 2-1 Akron victory over the Altoona Curve at People's Natural Gas Field.
Jordan Smith came up with the bases full against Altoona lefty Josh Smith (0-3) with two outs in the top of the 13th inning and the score tied at 1-1. In his third inning of relief, and fourth in the last two nights, Josh Smith had given up a single and two walks, but had also fanned a pair of batters in the inning. After working a 2-2 count, Jordan Smith hit a bouncing ball up the middle. Moving to his right, second baseman Max Moroff managed to knock the ball down behind second base, but had no play. Pinch-runner Justin Toole scored to give Akron the lead.
Five RubberDucks pitchers combined to limit the Curve to one run on seven hits, with no walks and eight strikeouts. Meanwhile, four Altoona hurlers joined forces to walk a whopping 13 batters, and hit another. RubberDucks right-hander Josh Martin (5-0) picked up the win in relief after pitching two scoreless innings. He lowered his ERA to 0.72. Enosil Tejeda worked the bottom of the 13th for his first save. Akron starter Will Roberts was masterful over seven innings, allowing just one run.
