Fightins falter late against Erie

The Fightin Phils (18-16) and Erie SeaWolves (13-22) went back and forth all game until Erie pulled away late to defeat Reading 7-5 on Saturday night. Jesse Biddle left the game after allowed three runs in four innings.

After a one hour and twenty-seven minute rain delay the Fightin Phils and Erie SeaWolves finally got underway at FirstEnergy Stadium. Erie scored two runs off Biddle in the top of the third inning to take a 2-0 lead. Reading tied the game at 2-2 off SeaWolves starter Austin Kubitza as KC Serna and Brock Stassi hit RBI groundouts.

Erie took a 3-2 lead off Biddle in the top of the fourth inning. Reading tied the game again as Brodie Greene hit a RBI single to extend his hitting streak to five games. The Fightin Phils took a 4-3 lead of the game as Brock Stassi hit a RBI single off Kubitza.

Hoby Milner tossed two scoreless innings before handing things over to Nefi Ogando (BS-2) in the seventh inning. Ogando struck out two batters and retired the side before giving up a tying solo home run from Wade Gaynor in the top of the eighth inning. Stephen Shackleford (2-1) entered the game in the top of the ninth inning and gave up three runs as Erie took a 7-4 lead.

Brock Stassi hit a RBI double off Jeff Farrell in the bottom of the ninth inning to cut the SeaWolves lead to 7-5. Aaron Altherr hit a single to move Stassi over to third base then Art Charles came up to the plate. Charles struck out swinging then Cameron Perkins struck out to end the game.

Altherr extended his hitting streak twelve games.

The Fightin Phils will wrap up their series on Sunday at FirstEnergy Stadium. First pitch is at 1:35 pm. Fans can listen to the game on CBS Sports Radio 1240 AM/98-5 FM and fightins.com beginning at 1:05 pm. Fans can also view the game on MiLB.tv beginning at 1:35 pm.
