New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - The New Britain Rock Cats were defeated by the Portland Sea Dogs by the score of 9-4 on Saturday evening at New Britain Stadium.
The Sea Dogs offense picked up from where they left off Friday night - collecting six straight hits to start the game, seven in total, against New Britain starter LHP Ryan Carpenter. The Red Sox's Eastern League partner batted around on the southpaw, going up 5-0 in the opening frame.
The Rock Cats answered back with two of their own in the bottom half of the inning. SS Trevor Story drew a one-out walk and ultimately came home on a wild pitch from RHP William Cuevas with C Tom Murphy at the plate. CF David Dahl shot a single past the shortstop to score LF Tyler Massey, who singled earlier himself.
Portland continued their run parade in the second, third and fourth innings, going up 9-2 on the home club. Carpenter would not make it out of the third inning, roughed up for eight runs, seven earned, on twelve hits while walking one and striking out one. The southpaw falls to 3-3.
Murphy crushed an opposite field two-run home run over the right field wall in the bottom of the eighth to pull the Cats' within five and make it a 9-4 ballgame.
C Tim Roberson was pacing the Sea Dogs offense for the second consecutive night. After his cycle performance on Friday, the backstop proceeded to go 4-5 on Saturday, making him 8 for his last 11 at-bats, to go along with 7 RBIs.
Portland starter Cuevas worked five innings en route to his fifth win of the season (5-1), allowing just the two runs on four hits while walking one and striking out five.
RHP Shane Carle gets the nod for the Rock Cats on Sunday afternoon, squaring off against Portland starter RHP Justin Haley. First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 p.m.
