Anderson Muzzles Mets in Solid Start

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - A long rain delay washed away the good vibes for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, who lost 6-1 Saturday to the Binghamton Mets in front of 1,884 fans at Binghamton's NYSEG Stadium.

The Fisher Cats (17-19) and Mets (21-15) were tied 1-1 going into a rain delay that lasted 83 minutes, but Binghamton exploded for four runs after the precipitation ceased to break the game wide open. The Fisher Cats fell to 4-12 away from Northeast Delta Dental Stadium, and they've lost six of their last seven games.

New Hampshire took the early lead in the top of the first inning, as Andy Fermin doubled, and then moved to third on a Kevin Nolan single off Mets starter John Gant (W, 3-2). K.C. Hobson bounced out to Josh Rodriguez at second base, allowing Fermin to score and make it a 1-0 game. The hosts answered in the bottom of the third against New Hampshire starting pitcher John Anderson (ND), with Eudy Piña coming in to score on a ground-out to Hobson at first and evening the score at 1-1.

The teams were still deadlocked in the middle of the sixth when the skies opened up and rain poured down, forcing the lengthy weather delay. When the game resumed, Cory Burns (L, 2-3) entered for Anderson and struggled through the bottom of the sixth. Josh Rodriguez started the inning with a triple and came home on a single by Jayce Boyd. With one out and runners at second and third, Aderlin Rodriguez singled through the middle to plate Boyd and David Cooper. The Mets kept on hitting, loading the bases with two outs and getting an RBI single out of Jared King to plate Albert Cordero. Josh Rodriguez flew out to end the inning, and the Mets exited the frame with a 5-1 lead.

Binghamton tacked on one more run in the bottom of the seventh against new reliever Greg Burke, as Boyd singled to begin the frame and came home on a one-out double by Dustin Lawley. The run made it a 6-1 lead for Binghamton, and the Fisher Cats were unable to respond.

Anderson took a no-decision, allowing a run on four hits and two walks while fanning three over five innings. Burns was saddled with the loss, having coughed up four runs on seven hits and a walk in his lone frame of action. Burke gave up a run on two hits in his only inning of work. Luis Perez worked a perfect eighth inning for the Fisher Cats.

The Fisher Cats will look for a series split on Sunday, with southpaw Matt Boyd on the hill against Binghamton righty Seth Lugo. Radio coverage begins at 12:45 p.m. with Ben Gellman on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network and at www.nhfishercats.com.
