Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland, Maine - Justin Head smacked two home runs as the Akron Aeros defeated the Portland Sea Dogs 3-2 Sunday afternoon at Hadlock Field in front of 6,300 fans. Akron (34-35) avoids the sweep. The two teams split the season series, each winning three games. The Sea Dogs fall to 36-32 on the season.
Both teams received good outings from their starting pitchers as Kyle Weiland and Scott Barnes mirrored one another for five innings. Weiland struck out a season high seven batters in five innings of work. He allowed just one run on three hits, walking three. Weiland lowers his team best ERA to 3.81. Meanwhile, Barnes (3-6) picks-up the win tossed five innings, allowing one hit on three runs. He would walk five and strike out eight.
Akron scored their first run in the fourth inning when Tim Fedroff singled to rightfield for their first hit of the game scoring Lonnie Chisenhall. Chisenhall and John Drennen both walked to set-up the run scoring single.
A Nate Spears sacrifice fly scoring Ryan Khoury tied the game at one in the fifth.
In the sixth inning, Head hit his first home run of the game, a solo shot over the Dunkin Donuts scoreboard off Portland reliever Ryne Miller to give the Aeros a 2-1 lead. Miller (2-5) takes the loss allowing one run on two hits in two innings on the hill.
Head would add an insurance run off Mitch Herold in the eighth inning giving Akron a 3-1 lead. Portland would battle back scoring a run in the eight on a Khoury RBI single to bring the Sea Dogs within a run.
Bryce Stowell closed out the ninth to earn his sixth save and preserve the win for the Aeros.
Khoury and Juan Apodaca each collected two hits, accounting for four of Portland's five hits on the afternoon.
The Portland Sea Dogs enjoy an off day on Monday. They will embark on a six game road trip with stops in Altoona, Pennsylvania and New Britain, Connecticut.
