Altoona Curve News Release
RICHMOND, Va - The Altoona Curve enjoyed a 3-2, 12-inning victory on Saturday night at The Diamond in Richmond defeating the Flying Squirrels (AA - San Francisco) which puts the team at their high-water mark of the 2010 season 20 games over .500.
Flying Squirrels reliever Rafael Cova uncorked a 12th-inning wild pitch that allowed Josh Harrison to score the deciding run, helping the Curve grab their second straight win over Richmond in the three-game series.
The Squirrels (32-37) grabbed the first run of the game in the first inning using back-to-back bunt singles off of Altoona starter Justin Wilson to set up their rally. Darren Ford and Skyler Stromsmoe reached and then promptly stole second and third base to set up Michael Ambort's sacrifice fly to right field.
Altoona (44-24) would tie and take the lead in the top of the fifth. Miles Durham's RBI double off of David Mixon knotted the score, before Kris Watts' RBI groundout gave the Curve a 2-1 edge.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Curve would relinquish their one run lead. Wilson departed after tossing a season-high 6.2 innings and leaving the tying run at third base. RHP Jeff Sues was unable to strand the runner as Darren Ford knocked home Connor Gillaspie to deadlock the game, 2-2.
In extra innings, Altoona twice left the bases loaded in the 10th and 11th innings before Cova's wild pitch in the 12th. Luckily, the Altoona Curve hurlers retired the last 10 Richmond hitters they faced to keep the Squirrels bats quiet.
The Altoona Curve look for the sweep on Sunday at 5:05 p.m. when they send RHP Tim Alderson (5-3, 4.70) to the hill against Richmond left-hander Clayton Tanner (4-4, 3.65). Air time on flagship radio station ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and Altoona Curve Radio Network affiliates is 4:35 p.m.
