Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
RICHMOND, VA - The Altoona Curve used a sun-aided triple and seven Richmond walks to complete a three-game sweep of the Richmond Flying Squirrels with a, 6-2, win in front of 7,367 on Sunday afternoon at The Diamond. The loss for the Squirrels extended their losing-skid to five games as Altoona swept them for the second time on the season.
Richmond left-hander Clayton Tanner and Altoona right-hander Tim Alderson traded scoreless innings through the fourth and the game went scoreless to the fifth inning. Tanner worked his way through trouble and kept the game scoreless into the bottom of the inning.
In the fifth, the Squirrels used a wicked hop that allowed Tyler La Torre to reach with a single to take the first lead of the night. La Torre reached to start the inning and a batter later, Tanner bunted him to second base. Darren Ford contributed his third hit of the ballgame, a bloop-single to left-center field to score him. The run was earned against Alderson as Richmond took a 1-0 lead.
The Curve responded in a big way in the sixth as Tanner endured some shaky defense behind him and the glare of the sun. Gorkys Hernandez got Altoona started with a solid-single into center field with one out. Josh Harrison followed with an infield-single to third that Conor Gillaspie couldn't handle. Matt Hague then sent another hard-shot to third that Gillaspie couldn't get cleanly. The error loaded the bases for Altoona and Jordy Mercer tied the game with a sacrifice fly to right field. After the Squirrels intentionally walked Hector Gimenez to reload the bases, Alex Presley lifted a fly ball to center field that Ford lost in the sun. Presley scampered all the way to third as the bases emptied for a 4-1 Altoona lead on the sun-aided triple.
Richmond got one run back off Alderson in the sixth, but Altoona put the game away with two insurance runs in the seventh. Tanner was charged with one of the runs in the seventh and departed to the loss after six-plus innings. He allowed five runs - one earned - on seven hits. He walked five and struck out two.
Alderson (6-3) earned the victory, eventually lasting seven innings and allowing just two runs on nine hits. He walked just one and struck out four.
Derek Hankins took the Curve to within an out of the sweep with a scoreless inning-and-two-thirds. Danny Moskos earned his league-leading 16th save of the season when he bounced Ford out for the final out of the ballgame.
The Squirrels will take Monday off as they travel to Akron, OH, to open a three-game series with the Akron Aeros (Cleveland Indians) on Tuesday night at 7:05 PM. In the opener of the series at Canal Park, RHP Mike MacDonald (1-6, 4.96) will make the start for Richmond against LHP Eric Berger (3-4, 5.25) for Akron.
