Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
RICHMOND, VA - The Altoona Curve got the last word in a marathon game two, plating a run in the top of the 12th inning to down the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 3-2, in front of a sell-out crowd of 9,560 at The Diamond on Saturday night.
The Curve mounted the game-winning rally against Richmond closer Rafael Cova in the 12th. Cova recorded the first two outs in the inning, but walked Josh Harrison. Matt Hague followed with a single to center field that moved Harrison to third. Cova (0-3) then unleashed a wild-pitch that plated Harrison with the winning run.
The Squirrels went with an unconventional approach to start a rally against Curve left-hander Justin Wilson in the first inning. Darren Ford led off with a bunt-single pushed to the right of Wilson on the mound. Skyler Stromsmoe followed and duplicated the bunt-single, moving Ford to second. The pair pulled off a successful double-steal and Richmond went ahead, 1-0, when Michael Ambort lifted a sacrifice fly to right field.
Squirrels' right-hander David Mixon faced just one over the minimum as he kept the Curve at bay for the first four innings. However, Altoona finally got to him for a pair of runs and the lead in the fifth. Miles Durham contributed an RBI double in the inning and Kris Watts brought home Alex Presley with a groundout that put Altoona in front.
Mixon left after six innings to a no-decision. He allowed just two earned runs on six hits, walked two and struck out one.
Richmond lifted him off the hook with a run to tie the ballgame in the seventh. The run was charged to Wilson as he departed in the midst of the rally. Ford singled Conor Gillaspie with the run. Gillaspie had led off the inning with a single. Wilson also didn't factor in the decision.
For the third time on the season, the two teams played into extra-innings. The stalemate was due to outstanding efforts from both bullpens. Jake Stevens worked a scoreless inning for Richmond before Tony Pena Jr. turned in a career-long performance and 3 2/3 scoreless innings. Cova retired the final batter in the 11th before his troubles in the 12th.
For Altoona, Jeff Sues worked 2 1/3 innings following Wilson. Tony Watson handled the 10th inning without incident and Michael Dubee did likewise in the 11th. The Curve improved to 2-1 in extra-inning games against Richmond with their win and 4-1 in extra-innings overall. Richmond dropped to 1-3 in extra-frames.
Dubee (3-1) was rewarded with his third victory of the season for his efforts. Left-hander Danny Moskos mowed down the Squirrels in order in the bottom of the 12th to claim his 15th save of the year.
The finale of the three-game series is scheduled for 5:05 PM on Sunday night at The Diamond. LHP Clayton Tanner (4-4, 3.65) will make the start for Richmond against RHP Tim Alderson (5-3, 4.70) for Altoona.
