LOOKING AHEAD:

Robbie Ftorek returns to the AHL for the first time since 1996 when he starts his second head coaching stint in Albany on Wednesday (7:00 ET). Ftorek spent four years leading New Jersey's AHL affiliates from 1992-96, guiding the River Rats to the Calder Cup in 1995, and is 292-195-68 in 555 career games behind AHL benches. Coincidentally for Ftorek, whose pro career began in Hampton Roads with the AHL's Virginia Wings in 1972, his latest tenure begins against the Norfolk Admirals, who visit the Pepsi Arena having won seven of their last eight. Captain Ajay Baines has nine points and a plus-11 rating in those eight contests.

Manchester and Lowell renew their rivalry at Tsongas Arena on Wednesday (7:00 ET), in a game with postseason implications in the Atlantic Division. The Monarchs currently sit in the fifth and final playoff spot, six points ahead of the Lock Monsters, who have dropped four in a row. It will be the 10th of 12 regular-season meetings between the clubs; Manchester owns a slim 5-4 edge in the series so far. The Monarchs are without All-Stars Pavel Rosa (recall) and Steve Kelly (injured), who have combined for 24 points against Lowell in 2003-04. AHL All-Star Game MVP Mike Zigomanis has tallied 8+17=25 pts. in 21 games since Christmas for the Lock Monsters.

And speaking of rivalries, Binghamton and Syracuse clash at the Onondaga County War Memorial on Wednesday (7:00 ET), less than a week after combining for 183 minutes in penalties in a heated 3-0 Crunch win on Feb. 13. Syracuse, which saw its six-game winning streak end on Monday, is back in the hunt for its second division title in three seasons, while the Senators are climbing the standings in the East having rediscovered their offense, scoring 43 goals in their last 11 games (7-3-1-0). Pascal Leclaire has just one regulation loss (8-1-2-2) in 13 decisions on home ice this season for the Crunch.
