Kane County Cougars News Release

Fort Wayne, IN - Mike Affronti hadn't played since Sunday because of back spasms, but the Kane County Cougars' shortstop didn't show any rust Friday night, as he returned to the lineup, homered and drove in five runs to lead the Cougars to a 7-4 victory over the Fort Wayne Wizards in front of 4,007 fans at Memorial Stadium. Starter James Heuser picked up his first win of the season, lasting 5 2/3 innings and helping the Cougars split the four-game series. The Cougars' offense wasted no time in taking the lead, scoring three times in the first against the Wizards' starter Nathan Culp, who had allowed more than one run just once this season. Haas Pratt was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and then Affronti drove in two with a single. After Larry Cobb's run-scoring single in the fourth scored Mike Massaro, who had three hits, Affronti crushed his third homer of the year in the sixth, a three-run blast that made it 7-0.

Heuser (1-1) had a three-hit shutout through four, including a stretch where retired seven straight hitters, allowed a run in the fifth and gave up two in the sixth before exiting. The left-hander scattered nine hits, allowed three runs, walked none and fanned seven. He's now struck out 41 hitters in 37 1/3 frames this season. Jason Fernandez allowed the game's final run in the seventh and logged 3 1/3 to pick up his first save and hand the loss to Culp (4-2).

The Cougars (7-25) continue their 11-game road trip Saturday afternoon at 4 CDT when they face the Beloit Snappers. John Herrera (2-1, 3.21) is scheduled to face Jose Lugo (1-2, 3.77).
