Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
Donovan Solano broke out of an 0-for-22 slump with a 4-for-5 night that included five runs batted in, and the Swing of the Quad Cities sent 12 men to the plate during a seven-run seventh inning to defeat the Lansing Lugnuts, 11-5, on Friday night at Oldsmobile Park.
Quad Cities (20-15) took the series with the victory, improving to 8-3 in the month of May and 5-3 on their current 10-day road trip. Lansing (17-14) battled back from an early deficit to tie the game at three after the fifth inning but was unable to take a lead.
The Swing led 4-3 heading into the seventh when they blew the game wide open. Solano and Jim Rapoport each singled and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt, and the Lugnuts followed by intentionally walking Brandon Buckman to load the bases. Mark Shorey then ripped a base hit into right that scored a pair, and a third run scored on the play thanks to an errant throw towards the infield. One out later Chris Grossman doubled home a run, and back-to-back walks loaded the bases. Solano capped the rally that he initially began, slapping a double to right that cleared the bases for an 11-3 lead.
Brandon Dickson (6-2) became the first Midwest Leaguer to six wins despite allowing three runs on six hits over five innings. The righty struck out four without issuing a walk, and was picked up by his offense when the Swing took the lead for good in the top of the sixth.
The Swing opened the scoring with a rally in the top of the second. With the bases loaded and one away Solano stepped up and sliced a two-run single to right. Men were at the corners when Rapoport followed with a hard-hit low liner to short, and when the ball snuck under the glove of Chris Gutierrez, Daryl Jones was able to race home for the 3-0 lead.
The Lugnuts rallied from there. Gutierrez doubled in Yuber Rodriguez in the third to put Lansing on the board, and after a Matt Liuzza homer led off the fifth, Gutierrez came through with an RBI-single to plate Rodriguez again and tie the game at three.
The deadlock did not last long. Christian Reyes led off the top of the sixth by slugging his second longball of the year - and second in as many days - beyond the fence to left field. With one swing of the bat, the 21-year-old Puerto Rican with a .444 average through seven games with the Swing gave Quad Cities a 4-3 lead they would not relinquish.
Blake King pitched well out of the bullpen, retiring nine of the ten batters that he faced and striking out four without issuing a walk. He allowed one unearned run on one hit.
Chase Lirette (4-2) took the loss after getting knocked around to the tune of seven runs - five earned - on seven hits over 6.1 innings.
