West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK - Duane Below fell one short of a Whitecaps team record as he struck out 14 batters in six innings on the mound to lead West Michigan to a 4-2 win over Cedar Rapids. The victory was the third in a row for Below and prevented the Whitecaps from being swept in a four game set for the first time since 2005.

Alan Webb holds the ‘Caps single game strike out record with 15 on August 26, 1998 at Beloit.

Through five innings on Friday, 13 of the 15 Kernels outs had been made via a Below strikeout.

Scott Sizemore went 4-for-4 at the plate for West Michigan. He scored the first two Whitecaps runs of the game - one in the fifth and one in the seventh. Sizemore also had two stolen bases.

Audy Ciriaco, Gorkys Hernandez and Deik Scram each had RBI during the ‘Caps three-run seventh. Hernandez went 3-for-4 with a double, 2 RBI and a stolen base.

Chris Pettit took over the Midwest League lead in doubles with three in the game for Cedar Rapids. He now has 14 on the season. However, Pettit was doubled off a second base in a key situation.

When the Kernels trailed 4-2 in the eighth inning, Mark Trumbo hit a pop up to shortstop Audy Ciriaco. Pettit ran to third and stayed there. The Whitecaps made an easy play at second for an inning-ending double play.

Stantrel Smith drove in the only Cedar Rapids runs of the night with a two run homer in the eighth.

The Kernels out-homered the Whitecaps 6-0 in the series.
