Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (May 11, 2007) - Three Clinton pitchers combined to shutout the Burlington Bees (14-19) in a 5-0 victory for the LumberKings (20-13) at Community Field tonight. With the win, the LumberKings get a split of this four-game series. The Bees are shutout for just the second time this year and tonight's game was the LumberKings' second shutout pitched as well.
Clinton got on the board early against Bees' starter Matt Campbell (1-2) with a run in the first and three in the third. On the second pitch of the game, Campbell hit Marcus Lemon to put the leadoff man aboard. Lemon moved to second on a groundout, advance to third on a single by John Whittleman, and scored as Chad Tracy reached on a fielder's choice. In the third inning, Campbell got two quick outs before Whittleman belted a solo homer to right to extend the Clinton lead to 2-0. After Tracy singled, K.C. Herren smacked another home run for a 4-0 lead. The hit extended Herren's hitting streak to eleven games. Campbell didn't allow any more runs and worked through six innings. Mario Santiago finished the final three innings and allowed a run on three hits. The LumberKings final tally came in the eighth when Whittleman singled for his third hit of the ballgame and scored on a two-out double by Herren down the line in right.
Clinton starter Zach Phillips (4-1) got out of an early jam and struck out seven over five innings for the win. Derrick Robinson and Jeff Bianchi singled in the first and the two pulled off a double steal to get runners on second and third with just one out, but Phillips got a pop-up and a strikeout to end the inning. The only other threat came in the fourth when the Bees loaded the bases with two outs on a single by O.D. Gonzalez and walks to Scott Lucas and Ross Boudreaux, but Phillips struck out Alvi Morel to end the inning. John Slusarz and Brett Zamzow each pitched two innings to finish the shutout. Each allowed just one hit.
The Bees continue this home stand tomorrow night with the first of four against the Swing of the Quad Cities. The first two games will be played at Community Field on Saturday and Sunday with the final two games on Monday and Tuesday to be played at John O'Donnell Stadium in Davenport. RH Harold Mozingo (2-3, 4.50) will start for the Bees tomorrow night. Game time is 6:00 for a Long John Silver's / A&W Family Night sponsored by Burlington's Flagship Station KCPS AM 1150. Gates open at 5:00. The Bees will give away a bicycle and everyone gets to run the bases after the game.
