Beloit Sky Carp News Release
Hall of Fame Second Baseman and Former Chicago Cub, Ryne Sandberg, will be coming to Beloit one week from Saturday (May 19th). As the new manager of the Peoria Chiefs, "Ryno" will be making his first of two appearances of the season at Pohlman Field.
Ryne Sandberg played for the Cubs from 1982-1994 and again from 1996-1997 after starting his career with the Philadelphia Phillies. Sandberg had a .285 career batting average with 282 home runs, 1061 RBI's, and 403 doubles. He won nine straight Gold Gloves from 1983-1991 and made the All-Star team every season from 1984-1993. In 1984, "Ryno" won the National League MVP Award with a .314 average, 19 home runs, 36 doubles, 19 triples, and 84 RBI's.
Sandberg set a Major League record for most consecutive games and chances at second base without an error. He also retired with more home runs than any other second baseman in the history of baseball. On August 28th, 2005, the Chicago Cubs retired his jersey #23 and his flag is located below Billy Williams' on the flagpole in right field.
"The way the fans have responded to the announcement of Ryno coming to town has been incredible," said Director of Media and Community Relations Erik VanDyck. "The excitement that he brings has really shown in the large amounts of tickets sold for these games. The way that we have been playing lately, and the circus that will be following Sandberg around, should make for a great atmosphere at Pohlman Field."
Tickets are still available for this upcoming series with Sandberg and the Chiefs (May 19 - May 20). Purchase your tickets online at www.snappersbaseball.com, by phone at 608-362-2272, or stop by Pohlman Field located at 2301 Skyline Drive in Beloit.
On Sunday, May 13th, following the Double Header vs. Kane County at 2:00 pm, 200 people will have the opportunity to go on field and pick up a plastic egg. One of those plastic eggs will have a voucher for a Blue Diamond worth $1,600. All of the other eggs will have randomly selected prizes from Brill Jewelers and the Beloit Snappers. To be part of the 200 people you must purchase a $5 raffle ticket by phone at 608-362-2272 or stop by Pohlman Field located at 2301 Skyline Drive in Beloit.
