Peoria Chiefs News Release
Dayton, OH - Dylan Johnston atoned for four fielding errors with one big swing and a three-run 9th inning homer to give the Peoria Chiefs a 10-9 win over the Dayton Dragons Friday night. The homer, the first of his professional career, capped a five run comeback and gave the Chiefs the only series win against the Dragons in 2007.
The Chiefs fought back in the ninth against Rojas. Wellington Castillo led off with a single and Blake Lalli followed with a double down the first base line to put two in scoring position. Camp reached on an infield single scoring Castillo for a 9-7 game as Jonathon Mota pinch ran for Lalli. Dylan Johnston atoned for four errors by blasting his first career homer, a three-run shot down the right field line and onto the street for a 10-9 Chiefs lead.
A disastrous first inning for the Chiefs staked the Dragons to an early 3-0 lead. Drew Stubbs led off by roping a double down the left field line. Peoria starter Jose Pina struck out Justin Turner before Chris Valaika reached on an infield single. Pina then hit Juan Francisco to load the bases with one out. Denis Phipps hit a tailor made double play to get Peoria out of the inning unscathed. But shortstop Dylan Johnston threw the ball away into right field allowing two runs to score. Logan Parker followed with a RBI single to give Dayton a 3-0 lead. Another error by Johnston on a potential inning-ending double play ball prolonged the inning before Pina escaped down three.
In the second, Pina was again let down by his defense. With one out and runners on first and second, Parker hit a double play grounder to second. Matt Camp threw to Johnston for the first out, but Johnston's throw to first was way off target to keep the inning alive. Gerardo Cabrera capitalized with a two-run double to left for a 5-0 Dragons lead.
Peoria got on the board and knocked starter Sean Watson from the game in the sixth. With one out, Johnston singled to left and went to third on a double by Alfred Joseph. Yusuf Carter battled to a full count before launching a line drive homer into the concession stand line in left. The blast was Carter's third home of the season and cut the Dayton lead to 5-3.
Dayton scored three in the seventh on two walks, a hit batter and an error to take an 8-3 lead. Peoria came charging back in the top of the eighth against reliever Misael DeJesus. Matt Camp led off with a bunt single and stole two bases while Dylan Johnston walked. Alfred Joseph reached on a fielders choice before Carter doubled home Camp. Dayton brought on closer Jose Rojas and Josh Lansford greeted him with a sac fly to center. Russ Canzler brought the Chiefs to within two at 8-6 with a RBI single to left. Jim Adduci lifted a deep flyball to right center but Phipps ran it down to end the inning.
Dayton added an insurance run in the eighth on two more errors in the inning by Johnston at shortstop. The second error was on a throw home allowing Stubbs to score after Turner grounded to short. Pina went five innings allowing four earned runs on five hits. He walked one, hit two and struck out three. Oscar Bernard allowed two earned runs without giving up a hit in 1 1/3 innings of work. Jayson Ruhlman allowed just an unearned run in 1 2/3 innings while striking out two. Rocky Roquet picked up his eighth save of the year and second of the series by striking out two in a one-hit ninth inning.
