Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, OH - For just the second time all season, the Dayton Dragons have lost back-to-back games dropping a 10-9 decision to the Peoria Chiefs. The Chiefs put up three runs in the eighth inning and four in the ninth to silence and stun both the Dragons and the 9,156 fans that jammed into Fifth Third Field. With the win, the Chiefs take three of four games in the series from Dayton, who drops its first series of the season.
Peoria kicked and threw the ball all over the infield committing six errors on the night. Dayton put up three in the first inning and two more in the third in innings extended by Peoria's failure to turn an inning ending double play. The Dragons even added on three runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth courtesy of three more Peoria errors.
Somehow, that wasn't enough. Peoria used a three run home run from Yusuf Carter in the sixth inning to cut the lead down to 5-3. That ended the night of Sean Watson (ND), who allowed just the three runs in 5.1 innings pitched. When Watson turned the game over to the bullpen, he was on pace to win his fourth game of the season. However, after the Dragons added three in the seventh, the Chiefs struck for three in the eighth off of Misael DeJesus (ND) and four in the ninth off of Jose Rojas (LP, 0-1) to rally for the victory.
Ironically, the hero of the night for Peoria was shortstop Dylan Johnston, who hit a three run home run off Rojas to give the Chiefs the 10-9 lead. It was Johnston earlier in the night who committed four of the six Peoria errors, but all was forgiven when his shot cleared the 320 mark down the right field line in the top of the ninth.
Before tonight, the Dragons were 22-0 when leading after seven innings of baseball, and 23-0 when leading after eight innings of baseball.
The Dragons open a quick two game series with the Fort Wayne Wizards at Memorial Stadium Saturday afternoon with 4:00 PM first pitch. RHP Jordan Smith (2-2, 2.37 ERA) will start for the Dragons, while the Wizards will send RHP Aaron Breit (1-4, 7.96 ERA) to the hill. 1410 ESPN Radio will carry the game live beginning with the Dragons Magazine Show at 3:00 PM, the Dragons Pre Game Show follows at 3:30 PM. The game will also be streamed live on the internet via All-In Broadcasting at www.daytondragons.com.
