Akron RubberDucks News Release

The Aeros made a bevy of roster moves today, as LHP Michael Tejera was promoted to Class AAA Columbus, IF Kyle Haines was transferred to Class A Kinston, IF Jerad Head was activated from the disabled list, and IF Jesus Merchan was received from the AZL Indians.

Tejera made just four starts for Akron after signing with Cleveland as a minor league free agent July 7th, but got better every time out. The native of Havana, Cuba won both of his last two starts for the Aeros, turning in quality starts in both outings. He went 2-2 with a 5.56 ERA in his four Double-A starts, but was 2-1 with a 3.50 ERA if you erase his first appearance.

Haines was also signed as a free agent, and joined the club June 2nd. The switch-hitter began his Akron career in an 0-15 slump before rebounding to hit .311 over his final 13 games. An Eastern League All-Star with the Connecticut Defenders last season, Haines batted .233 with no homers and two RBI in 19 games total for the Aeros.

Head went on the DL July 17th with a right shoulder sublux, suffering the injury when diving for a ball in left field. The versatile native of Topeka, KS has been a valuable commodity for the team all season, batting .286 with four homers and 26 RBI while playing six different positions (seven if you count DH) and batting in seven different spots in the lineup (everywhere except third or fourth). He wears #13.

Merchan signed a free agent deal with Cleveland in the off-season but underwent hernia surgery during spring training. He has appeared in six games with the Arizona League Indians this season, batting .316 (6-19) with four runs scored. The veteran from Maracay, VZ is an accomplished hitter, sporting a .294 career minor league average in 815 games between the Minnesota Twins, Philadelphia Phillies, Seattle Mariners and Arizona Diamondbacks organizations entering this season. He enjoyed his best year in 2008, posting career-highs in batting average (.339), hits (148), doubles (23) and RBI (72) for Tucson in the Class AAA Pacific Coast League (Diamondbacks affiliate). He will wear #6, and is in the lineup today batting second and playing shortstop.
