Aerodynamics...

- Saturday Shutdown...The Curve defeated the Aeros last night by the final count of 9-3 in front of 4,889 fans at Canal Park. Akron took a big lead early against Altoona lefty Kyle Bloom as CF Jose Constanza led the game off with a walk and LF Nick Weglarz later reached base with an infield single. For the second night in a row, C Carlos Santana blasted a home run for his 17th of the season to give the Aeros a quick 3-0 cushion. The Curve would rebound however, striking for two runs in the third before a two-run homer from top-prospect Pedro Alvarez put the visitors ahead to stay in the fifth. Altoona then broke the game open in the eighth, scoring five times off Aeros relievers Carlton Smith and Matt Meyer, who both issued two walks in the inning.

- Wild Weglarz...One of two Aeros with a multi-hit game last night, Weglarz returned to the Akron lineup last night with a solid performance against the Curve. He scored a run in the first after beating out an infield single, and also laced a base hit to right in the third inning while finishing 2-5 at the plate. Battling a sore back, the slugger had played just two games in the past week and just five games in the last 15 days because of his participation in the Futures Game. His first-inning single snapped an 0-19 slump, although he's still in a 9-61 (.148) skid dating to June 28th.

- Mr. Quality Start...RHP Josh Tomlin recorded his team-leading 11th quality start of the season last night, as he surrendered four runs (three earned) on nine hits in seven innings while walking none and striking out two. Tomlin, the only pitcher to start more than 15 games in the purple and black in 2009, has been consistent all season and is one of only three pitchers in the Eastern League with nine wins. The 24-year-old native of Whitehouse, Texas has struggled recently in starts against divisional rival Erie, but against all other teams he is now 9-4 with a 3.08 ERA and has notched a quality start in 11 of 15 outings (14 starts). A product of Texas Tech University, his 87 strikeouts rank fifth in the league although his 16 homers allowed are tied for second.

- Jolly Jose...Akron CF Jose Constanza had another magnificent game at the plate last night, finishing 1-2 with a run scored, three walks, and a pair of stolen bases. The speedy 25-year-old out of the Dominican Republic is having a banner season with the Aeros in 2009, as he is now batting .287 in 91 games played with a stellar .372 on-base percentage. His 28 steals rank second in the league, and he has now recorded multiple walks in six of his past 13 contests. - Two In, Two Out...The Aeros made some roster moves today, with LHP Michael Tejera going to Class AAA Columbus, IF Kyle Haines going to Class A Kinston, IF Jerad Head being activated from the DL, and IF Jesus Merchan joining the club from the Arizona League. Head missed the last nine games with a right shoulder injury, while Merchan had hernia surgery during spring training. He appeared in six games for the AZL Indians, batting .316 (6-19) with four runs scored.
