Akron RubberDucks News Release

How Sweep it is...The Aeros completed a four-game sweep of the Erie SeaWolves Thursday night at Canal Park, blowing away the now third-place Wolves by the final score of 13-4. Akron jumped out of the gates with a bang, putting six on the board in the first and three more in the second en route to their first four-game sweep since July 4th-7th, 2008 at Binghamton. A two-run single by C Carlos Santana in the first started the scoring, as his two-hopper bounced over the head of Erie second baseman Danny Worth to score two runs. The Aeros would follow that fortuitous bounce with RBI singles from 3B Jerad Head and CF Mickey Hall before SS Carlos Rivero provided the capper with a two-run homer. Akron added three more runs in the second to take an insurmountable 9-0 lead for RHP Josh Tomlin, who earned his 10th win with his third straight quality start. Every Aero recorded at least one hit, eight different players scored, and five finished with multiple RBI nights.

Tomlin's Tenth...The lanky right-hander out of Whitehouse, TX is having a banner season for the Aeros in 2009, as he now leads the team with 12 quality starts in 19 tries (20 outings overall). Tomlin also defeated Erie for the first time in five starts, and became just the second player in the Eastern League with 10 wins this season. He permitted three runs on eight hits in six innings last night, walking one and striking out three after entering the contest 0-4 with a 9.16 ERA against the SeaWolves this year. The 24-year-old now ranks third in the league with 90 strikeouts despite allowing 16 home runs (none last night).

Quite Peachy...One of the quieter stars during this weeklong home stand was Mickey Hall, who had yet another impressive performance last night in finishing 1-3 with a walk, a run scored and two RBI. The native of Marietta, GA has been hot lately in posting a .344 batting average and .489 on-base percentage in 12 contests since the All-Star Break, and has now appeared in 11 straight games for Akron. Hall began the season with the Aeros before spending two months in Class AAA Columbus, returning July 11th when Carlos Santana and Nick Weglarz went on the inactive list to participate in the Futures Game.

An Erie Beat-Down...In the four games at Canal Park this week against the SeaWolves, the Aeros dominated throughout and won each game by at least four runs. In the first four-game sweep in almost 13 months, first-place Akron out-scored Erie 34-9 while batting .432 (19-44) with runners in scoring position. The 34 runs were a season-high for any particular series, and the Aeros are now 7-12 against Erie despite losing nine straight at Jerry Uht Park earlier this year.

On the Road Again...Akron hits the road tonight for the beginning of a three-game set at NYSEG Stadium in Binghamton, NY. The last-place Mets split four games in Ohio back in late June, but rank last in the league with a 5.14 team ERA. The Aeros own a .574 winning percentage vs. the B-Mets all-time, their second highest win percentage against any active franchise in the EL.
