NORFOLK, VA - Chris Durno's breakaway goal with 1:09 left in regulation was the difference despite 48 saves from goaltender Joel Martin in his first start as a Sound Tiger, as the Norfolk Admirals defeated Bridgeport 3-2 at Scope Arena in Norfolk on Saturday night. Norfolk improves to 21-10-7-2. The Sound Tigers fall to 18-19-3-2.
Robin Figren would give the Sound Tigers a 1-0 lead on the team's first shot of the game. Johan Harju's hit on Brett Motherwell warranted a penalty at 5:52 and the Sound Tigers took advantage. Robin Figren's slap shot from above the left circle beat Dustin Tokarski for his 11th goal of the season at 6:32 of the first period. Norfolk had the overwhelming 15-3 shot advantage, but Joel Martin stopped all 15 shots he saw and the Sound Tigers led 1-0 after 20 minutes.
Norfolk tied the game just 1:21 into the second period. Mike Angelidis' shot from above the left faceoff circle caught a piece of Martin, but the puck snuck between Martin's left arm and his body, tricking across the goal line to tie the game at one. The Sound Tigers would retake the lead with their second power play goal of the game with just over seven minutes left in the second period. Mark Katic's shot from the point was stopped by Tokarski, but the rebound came right to Motherwell who banged it home for his second goal in as many games to give the Sound Tigers a 2-1 lead. Norfolk answered with 4:40 left in the 2nd when Chris Durno deflected a Radko Gudas shot past Martin to knot the score 2-2 heading to the final period despite a 37-13 shot advantage for Norfolk to that point.
The Sound Tigers had two power play chances in the third, but couldn't add to their two-goal total with the man-advantage. Joel Martin continued to make big saves, but Norfolk finally broke through with just 69 seconds remaining. Durno broke in on a partial breakaway and snuck the puck through Martin's pads to give the Admirals a 3-2 lead. The Sound Tigers pulled Martin but were unable to find the equalizer in the waning seconds.
Joel Martin made a season-high 48 saves in the loss. Dustin Tokarski made just 17 saves to earn the win for Norfolk.
The Sound Tigers return to action Tuesday night when they host the Providence Bruins at 7:00 p.m.
