Manitoba Moose News Release

Coming off of a shutout victory over the Milwaukee Admirals (24-12-2-4) on Thursday night, the Manitoba Moose (22-12-1-4) aimed to extend their win streak to three in a row. Their leading scorer Sergei Shirokov put Manitoba on the board less than a minute in, but it was Milwaukee's sniper Linus Klasen that closed out the 3-2 overtime victory for the Admirals.

It took Sergei Shirokov 11 games to tie the Moose franchise record point streak but only 0:56 to break it. Less than a minute into the game, Shirokov banked in a shot from behind the net and off of Mark Dekanich's left pad. With that goal he extended his point streak to 12 games (10g, 4a).

The Moose struck again at 11:07 as defenceman Kevin Connauton took a slap shot from the point that was deflected by an Admiral stick and bounced over the shoulder of Dekanich. The goal was assisted by Moose captain Nolan Baumgartner and Shirokov. The assist from Baumgartner kept his point streak alive with 1g, 7a over the past six games.

The first period ended with the Moose firmly in control of the game leading 2-0 and outshooting the Admirals 9-3.

The Admirals came out strong in the second period looking for redemption, but were unable to get past Moose goaltender Eddie Lack (14-8-2) who stopped seven shots in the first ten minutes of the period.

At 9:17 Moose winger Josh Aspenlind took the first penalty of the game which was successfully killed by the Moose with the help of Lack holding the fort.

At 14:25 Admirals defenceman Aaron Johnson took a penalty for hooking. After his penalty was up he received a pass at center and was off on a clean breakaway, but to his dismay Lack shut the door yet again.

Shortly after at 16:50 the Admirals finally cracked Lack as winger Matt Halischuck tipped a shot from defenceman Scott Ford that drifted over the goaltender's shoulder.

The second period ended with the Admirals closing the gap 2-1 and drawing close in the shot count, 18-17.

The third period began and the Admirals looked to tie up the game. Three minutes into the third, they did just that as Aaron Johnson picked up the rebound on a botched give and go from teammates Blake Geoffrion and Gabriel Bourque.

The Moose took control in the last half of the period outshooting the Admirals, but it was Dekanich's turn to stand on his head and shut down the Moose offence.

The third period ended with the game tied 2-2 with the Moose leading 32-24 in shots as they went into overtime.

Just 29 seconds into the overtime period, Admirals leading scorer Linus Klasen put home a turn around slap shot to give Milwaukee the 3-2 victory. Manitoba's Eddie Lack made 23 saves while Mark Dekanich turned aside 30 of 32 attempts by the Moose.

The Moose host a pair of North Division rivals next week with the Toronto Marlies at MTS Centre on Tuesday and Wednesday, then the Abbotsford Heat on Friday and Sunday afternoon. Game time for Sunday, January 23 is at noon when the first 5,000 fans at MTS Centre will receive a Nolan Baumgartner bobblehead.
