Norfolk Admirals News Release
NORFOLK, Va. - Captain Chris Durno's go-ahead goal with 1:09 remaining in regulation brought a season-high crowd of 8,103 at Norfolk Scope Arena to their feet, as the Norfolk Admirals (21-10-7-2) defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (18-19-3-2), 3-2, on Saturday night during the Fourth Annual Pink in the Rink to Benefit Susan G. Komen For the Cure. The Admirals will square off against the Charlotte Checkers tomorrow evening in North Carolina at 5:00 p.m.
Durno scored twice while Mike Angelidis also scored for the Admirals. Dustin Tokarski earned his seventh win of the season by stopping 17 of 19 shots. Norfolk out-shot Bridgeport 51-19 in the game, as Sound Tigers goaltender Joel Martin turned aside 48 shots.
One night after Norfolk scored on its first shot of the game, the Sound Tigers returned the favor just 6:32 into the first period with a Robin Figren power play tally. Mark Katic sent a backhand pass from the high slot to Figren at the top of the right circle. Figren sent a wrist shot through traffic that deflected off a Norfolk defender and over the left shoulder of Tokarski. Despite a 15-3 shot advantage through one period, the Admirals trailed 1-0 after one period.
The home team tied the game just 1:21 into the second stanza on Angelidis' fourteenth goal of the season. Marc-Antoine Pouliot entered the attacking zone down the right wing and dropped a pass to Angelidis at the top of the right circle. Angelidis sent a slap shot that squeezed through the left arm and body of Sound Tigers goaltender Joel Martin and trickled into the net.
Bridgeport netted another power play goal to briefly retake the lead at 12:53 of the second period. Katic sent a shot from the high slot through traffic that bounced off Tokarski's legs. Brett Motherwell was on top of the goalmouth and quickly sent the rebound past Tokarski's left leg.
However, the Admirals leveled the score at 2-2 less than three minutes later on Durno's first goal of the game. Radko Gudas sent a high wrist shot from the left point. Durno deflected the shot from between the hashmarks down and past the right leg of Martin at 15:20. The Admirals owned a 22-10 advantage in shots on goal in the second period.
It appeared as if Martin would keep the game tied through regulation as he turned aside the first 13 shots Norfolk took in the final frame. However, the fourteenth shot found its mark with Durno's second goal of the game. Johan Harju found a loose puck in the neutral zone chipped a pass to Durno for a partial breakaway. Durno sent a shot through Martin's leg at 18:51 for the game-winning goal and his thirteenth tally of 2010-11.
Dustin Tokarski (19 shots, 17 saves) picked up the win. Joel Martin (51 shots, 48 saves) was saddled with the loss.
Norfolk was 0-3 on the power play. Bridgeport was 2-6.
