Admirals Release Gregg Johnson and Mitch Maunu

NORFOLK, VA - Admirals General Manager Al MacIsaac announced today that the team has released forward Gregg Johnson from a Professional Tryout Contract (PTO) and has released defenseman Mitch Maunu from a Standard Player's Contract (SPC).

Johnson, 24, is a 5'11", 191 lb. center from Windsor, Connecticut. He appeared in three games with the Admirals during his recent stint with the team, going scoreless with no penalty minutes. He will return to the Trenton Titans (ECHL), where he had 11 goals and 16 assists for 27 points and 6 penalty minutes in 21 games.

Johnson had also appeared in one game earlier this season for the Admirals, going scoreless with no penalty minutes on October 28 versus the Hartford Wolf Pack. He attended Admirals training camp earlier this fall.

Originally an eighth round draft pick (256th overall) of the Ottawa Senators in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, Johnson is a veteran of three professional seasons spent with the Binghamton Senators (AHL), Pee Dee Pride (ECHL), Trenton and Norfolk.

Johnson has appeared in 93 career AHL contests - 88 with the Binghamton Senators - posting eight goals and 22 assists for 30 points and 49 penalty minutes.

Maunu, 20, is a 6'1", 214 lb. defenseman from Thunder Bay, Ontario in his first professional season. He had played in nine games for Norfolk this season going scoreless with eight penalty minutes.

Maunu had also skated in 19 contests with the Storm this season, recording five assists and 36 penalty minutes. He registered his first pro point on November 11 at Johnstown with an assist.

Maunu was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the fourth round (120th overall) of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. He signed an AHL Standard Player's Contract with the Admirals last August.

The Admirals take to the ice at Scope for two crucial East Division games against the Hershey Bears. Opening faceoff will happen at 7:15 on Wednesday night and Friday night. On Friday night, the first 2,500 fans through the gates will receive an Admirals tee shirt, courtesy of Liberty Tax Service. Norfolk also hosts the Lowell Devils at Scope on Saturday night at 7:15, with the first 2,500 fans receiving an Admirals team poster courtesy of Tropical Smoothie Café.
