Iowa Chops News Release
DES MOINES, IA - Iowa Stars Director of Hockey Operations Scott White announced today that Defenseman Mario Scalzo has been reassigned by the Canadian National Team back to the Iowa Stars.
Selected by Hockey Canada to partake in the Spengler Cup that ran from December 26th to 31st in Davos, Switzerland, Scalzo and the Canadian National Team dropped a 3-2 decision to HC Davos in the Championship game. The Iowa Stars blueliner registered the game's first goal, his only point of the tournament, however Team Canada was unable to maintain their two-goal lead and finished in second place for the second straight tournament.
In his second season as a professional, Scalzo currently has two goals, 10 assists and 40 penalty minutes in 29 games with Iowa this season: 29(2/10/12)40. In 74 games last season, the St-Hubert, Quebec-native had four goals, 29 assists, 42 PIM's and a 'plus 9' rating for the Stars: 74(4/29/33)+9. His 29 assists had him tied for first among all Iowa blueliners and was third overall on the Stars.
The Spengler Cup is the oldest continual club tournament in the world dating back to 1923. The Canadian National Men's Team has competed at the event since 1984 and has won 10 titles during that period. Canada last won the Spengler Cup in 2003 and finished second at last year's tournament.
