Milwaukee Admirals News Release
Milwaukee, WI- In front of an AHL season-high crowd of 17,653 and largest crowd at the Bradley Center in over ten years, the Milwaukee Admirals jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held on for a 3-2 victory over the Chicago Wolves Friday night at the Bradley Center.
Simon Gamache gave the Admirals a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes of play when he scored his 17th goal of the season. Defenseman Rick Berry carried the puck in the Admirals zone and fired a shot on goal that Chicago goaltender Tuomas Tarkki didn't control and Gamache took the rebound and put it past the Wolves' netminder. Greg Classen added an assist on the play.
In spite of spending more than half of the second period on a power play, it was in even strength goal that gave the Ads a 2-0 lead heading into the third period. On a two-on-one rush, Gamache chipped a pass over to Haydar who deeeked Tarkki and then slipped the puck by him. Classen also picked up an assist on that play.
A short handed goal by Kevin Klein gave Milwaukee a 3-0 lead at the 1:22 mark of the third and it looked as if the Ads would cruise to their 48th win of the year. But the Wolves responded with two goals in less then a minute, scored by Kevin Doell and Karl Stewart, and suddenly what looked to be a blowout had become a nail bitter.
However, the Ads defense stood firm the rest of the way, helped in part by a 5:00 major penalty to Chicago forward Francis Lessard that put the Ads on the power-play for the final three minutes of the game.
Brian Finley stopped 16 of 18 shots thrown his way, including a penalty shot awarded to Kevin Doell in the second period. Classen had three assists to pace the Admirals offense, while Gamache and Haydar each chipped in a goal and an assist.
The Admirals remain two points up on the Houston Aeros in the race for the West Division crown. The Aeros beat Omaha 5-4 in a shoot-out on Friday night. Milwaukee will finish up the regular season tomorrow night versus the Grand Rapids Griffins. The Admirals need to win tomorrow night and have Houston lose either one of their final two games to secure their second division title in three years.
The Ads will begin the 2006 Calder Cup Playoffs on Friday, April 21st and Saturday, April 22nd with 7:00 pm games both nights at the Bradley Center. The opponent for these games is yet to be determined. To purchase tickets fans can call Ticketmaster at (414) 276-4545 or log on to www.ticketmaster.com.
