Three Power-Play Goals Boost Bears

PHILADELPHIA - The Hershey Bears scored three times on 10 power play opportunities, including twice in five-on-three situations, and took a 4-1 win over the Phantoms on Friday night at the Wachovia Spectrum. Over 11,000 piled into the Philadelphia landmark for the final home game of the 10th Anniversary Season.

After a scoreless first period, the Phantoms buried the game's first goal while on the power play at 4:23. John Slaney blasted a slap shot from the left circle that sailed high and took a long bounce off the end glass back in front of the net, where Tony Voce swept it home for the 1-0 lead. For Voce, it was his team leading 28th, including 18 on the power play.

Hershey evened the score at 9:06 of the frame. While working on a five-on-three advantage, Lawrence Nycholat launched a wrister from the slot that deflected off a Phantom, went through a screen and beat rookie Scott Munroe.

The Bears took a 2-1 lead at 12:50 of the second period, again on the power play. This time it was Tomas Fleischmann putting a puck through a pile of people in the crease and giving Hershey the advantage.

It was another scramble in front of the net that resulted in the Bears third goal at the 9:50 mark of the third period. Munroe was prone, trying to cut off access to the net, but the puck was jammed at and eventually pushed home by Kris Beech, putting Hershey up 3-1. Later in the period, at 14:51, Graham Mink closed out the scoring with another five-on-three tipped tally.

Hershey ended the night three-for-10 on the power play, while the Phantoms were one-for five. Munroe took the loss with 33 saves on 37 shots, while Frederic Cassivi gathered the win with 25 saves on 26 shots.

After the game, Philadelphia staged its annual Shirts Off Our Back event, giving the team's white jerseys to fans chosen as part of Fan Appreciation Night.
