Milwaukee Admirals News Release
Milwaukee, WI-The Admirals finished Tuesday night's game on the wrong side of another one-goal loss to the Iowa Stars. The Admirals took the lead early, but bad penalties and a depleted roster allowed the win to slip away late in the third in a 3-2 loss at the Bradley Center.
The Admirals were dealt a tough blow before the game even got underway as defenseman Kevin Klein was recalled to Nashville on Monday and leading scorer Alexander Radulov got the call on Tuesday afternoon.
This didn't stop Ramzi Abid, however, who found the back of the net early, at 2:59 into the first period. After slipping past Iowa's defense and receiving a sharp pass from Shane Endicott, Abid beat Iowa's Dan Ellis for his fifth of season.
"The first goal is always a key moment in a game, especially at home." Abid explained in an in-game interview. "You want to get the fans behind you."
Aside from Abid's goal, the fans were treated to many edge-of-your-seat moments as the Ads peppered Ellis in the first two periods. Ellis was making his first start since allowing eight goals a week ago against Chicago. But he seemed unfazed by Kim Staal's first period shot off the post and numerous pointblank shots for Rich Peverley, Ramzi Abid, and Alex Henry. At one point, in the second period, the Stars were being out shot 18-9.
The Admirals entered the second period with a one-goal lead. Coming into tonight's game the Admirals were 4-0-1 when leading after the first period. Their only loss in that situation came against none other than the Iowa Stars, who topped the Admirals 3-2 in overtime on November 3rd.
Iowa was able to get the only marker in the second period when Milwaukee goaltender Scott Reid made a diving save on a shot by Joel Lundqvist. But in doing so, gave up a rebound to Krys Barch who was able to tally an easy point with 5:30 left in the period.
The Admirals opened the third tied 1-1, but were forced to start the period a man short as they tried to kill off T.J. Reynold's five minute major for boarding. Reynolds opened up the forehead of Star's right wing Vojtech Polak when he checked him from behind with less than a minute to go in the second period.
"The penalty wasn't great." Coach Claude Noel explained in a somber tone. "You can't hit a guy when you're looking at his numbers."
Kelsey Wilson served Reynold's penalty and it was from there he saw Hobey Baker winner, Marty Sertich, slide a puck past Reid from the corner of the crease at 4:35 into the third. The Star's power play had expired, but Wilson had yet to get back in the play.
The Admirals tied it up with a power play goal at 9:08 in the third. Milwaukee passed it around the offensive zone for a large portion of the power play inciting cries of, "shoot" from the fans. Finally, Cal O'Reilly gave the fans what they wanted and put a wrister past Ellis.
But back-to-back minor penalties from the Admirals allowed for another Iowa power play goal. Polak, who had returned from the locker room after the hit by Reynolds, would be credited with the game-winner. His shot form the blue line went through a sea of players before reaching the net with four and a half minutes left.
"I didn't like the penalties," explained Noel of his team. "You can't give them that many power play chances and expect that you're going to come through."
Noel summed up his thoughts on the game, "We could have won that game, but we didn't get it done"
Noel and the Admirals will board a bus tonight and head down to Chicago before flying out to Rochester for Wednesday night's game with the Americans. Rochester, a "dynamite team" according to Noel, will be the first of ten games in the Admiral's upcoming road trip.
