Iowa Chops News Release

SYRACUSE, NY - After busing from Milwaukee after Tuesday's game to then fly from Chicago at 9:30 this morning, the Iowa Stars made their first appearance in Syracuse, New York to play the Crunch on Wednesday. The second game of a six-game road trip saw the Stars earn a 3-2 road win for the second consecutive game.

The Crunch grabbed the early lead in the first period when Mark Hartigan's shot from outside the blueline glanced off the catching glove of Iowa Goaltender Tobias Stephan. The power-play goal came at 2:18 of the opening stanza. Just :28 seconds later, Iowa was able to tie the score at one. Rookie Marty Sertich registered his sixth goal of the season. John Lammers and Krys Barch picked-up the assists. For Barch, it was his fourth point in three games: 3(2/2/4).

At 3:36 of the second period, Syracuse regained the lead with Hartigan's second goal of the game. Syracuse's lead lasted just under eight minutes. Iowa's Joel Lundqvist won the face-off in the offensive zone, Sertich collected the puck and sent it to Defenseman Mark Ardelan. Ardelan fired a one-time shot that glanced off of Lundqvist for a five-on-three power-play goal. It was Lundqvist's fourth power-play goal of the season and just the fourth shot of the period for Iowa. With a bench minor penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct called on Syracuse, Iowa was again granted a five-on-three power-play. On the very next shot after the Lundqvist goal, Defenseman Mario Scalzo gave Iowa their first lead of the game. Scalzo's first goal of the season came at the 12 minute mark and was assisted by Mike Green and Vojtech Polak. The Crunch out-shot the Stars 16 to 7 in the period, but Iowa registered two goals on the seven shots.

The Crunch out-shot the Stars 7 to 2 in the third period, but Iowa's netminder Tobias Stephan held his ground. With Syracuse on the power-play and Crunch Goaltender Tomas Popperle on the bench in favor of the extra attacker, Stephan made several key saves in the last two minutes of the game to preserve the win for Iowa.

Stephan made 29 saves in the victory and was named the Number Three Star of the Game.

The Stars allowed just one power-play goal in 11 man-down situations.
