Alaska Aces News Release
BOISE, Idaho - Barrett Heisten scored twice in the third period, including the game-winner with 12:15 left to play, as Alaska buried a season-high five goals to claim a 5-2 victory over first-place Idaho before 4,405 at Qwest Arena.
The Aces took a number of penalties early in the first period and fell behind 1-0 on a power pay goal scored by David Bararuk at the 2:26 mark. While the Steelheads held a 19-9 advantage in shots through 20 minutes, Alaska looked sharp five-on-five, and tied the game midway through the second period when Cam Keith redirected Heisten's shot from the left half-boards by Matt Yeats. Chris Minard gave the Aces their first lead of the game at 2-1 by tipping in a Mike Scott shot from the point on an Alaska power play with 44 seconds left in the frame.
With Idaho shorthanded once again, captain D'Arcy McConvey deadlocked the contest 2-2 with a wrist shot that squeezed by Aces goalie Matt Underhill on the blocker side early in the third period, but Alaska never wavered. Back at even strength, Minard, streaking down the right wing, found Heisten on the back door, and with a flick of the wrist, the redirection gave the Aces an edge they would never relinquish. Olivier Filion scored his first goal of the year on a similar feed from Scott with 8:29 remaining, and Heisten's empty-netter at 19:22 sealed the outcome, Alaska's first road victory of the season.
The Aces out-shot the Steelheads 30-14 over the final two periods, and after seeing his team score just five goals in his previous four starts, Underhill claimed his first victory since Opening Night against San Diego. In dropping to 7-2, Idaho saw its West Division lead trimmed to just two points.
Alaska (5-2-2) will practice tomorrow, then resume its series with Idaho Friday and Saturday night at 5:05 p.m. ADT. All games will be broadcast live on KFQD AM 750 and at www.alaskaaces.com. B2 Networks will broadcast both of this weekend's games in Idaho on a pay-per-view basis as well as all five of Alaska's home tilts against Last Vegas and Utah later this month.
