Aces Drop Sixth Straight

December 5, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Long Beach Ice Dogs scored four goals in span of 11:50 in the second period to rally from a 2-0 deficit and pull out a 5-3 victory over the Anchorage Aces Wednesday night at Sullivan Arena.

The Aces came out smoking in the first period, scoring just 1:46 into the game as J.J. Wrobel set up rookie Jiri Jakes for a 1-0 lead, marking only the fifth time all year that Anchorage had scored the game's first goal. Wrobel later found Kimbi Daniels for a power play goal at 10:42, giving the Aces a 2-0 edge heading into the second period.

Anchorage sleepwalked its way through most of the middle frame, as Tomas Hradecky's goal only 1:32 into the period started a chain reaction. Chris Kenady, Jamie O'Leary, and Tyler Johnston all found the back of the net over the next twelve minutes while the Aces mustered just five shots on goal in the entire period.

Anchorage woke up in time to deliver a solid third period performance, drawing within 4-3 at 4:39 as Jakes scored his second of the game on another power play. With the Aces having pulled their goaltender Ryan Person, who finished with 22 saves, Long Beach won a crucial draw in its own zone and Kenady found Jeff Attard for an empty-netter with 20.9 seconds left on the clock.

Rookie netminder B.J. Boxma picked up his sixth victory in his last seven starts, finishing with 17 saves, including a spectacular, diving stop of Dean Larson with less than three minutes remaining. The Ice Dogs (10-8) have beaten Anchorage in six of seven meetings this year, thanks in large part to their top line of Kenady, Hradecky, and O'Leary, who have racked up an amazing 50 points against the Aces this year.

Anchorage, losers of six in a row to fall a dozen games under the .500 mark at 4-16-1, entertains Bakersfield in a three-game series beginning Friday night at 7:00 p.m. and continuing with a Saturday night contest at 7:00 p.m., followed by a Sunday matinee at 5:00 p.m. The Condors (13-5) have won 10 of their last 11 games but were beaten by the Aces by a score of 3-2 in Bakersfield in their only previous meeting October 19. All games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.anchorageaces.com or www.kfqd.com with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.
