DAVENPORT, Iowa - Albert Abreu tossed five scoreless innings and the Quad Cities River Bandits held on for a 5-4 series-opening victory over the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Monday night at Modern Woodmen Park. Hector Roa had a three-hit game for the Bandits and drove home the winning run in the eighth on a double.

Abreu (2-6) collected his second win for Quad Cities (2-3, 33-41) with the five-inning shutout performance. The righty scattered three hits and allowed just two walks while striking out six. Franklin Perez finished off the win over Cedar Rapids (3-2, 39-35) with a four inning save. Perez allowed four runs on six hits while striking out five.

Leading by one, Dexture McCall led off the bottom of the eighth with a single and Myles Straw replaced him on the base paths as a pinch runner. Roa knocked a double to score Straw and put the Bandits on top by two, 5-3.

The eighth inning run proved to be the game winner as the Kernels cut the lead to one in the ninth but could not complete the comeback. Brad Hartong led off with a double and moved to third on a groundout. A sacrifice fly from Jermaine Palacios made it a 5-4 game, but Zander Wiel struck out looking to seal the win for the Bandits.

The River Bandits started the scoring early with a two-spot in the first frame. Arturo Michelena started the offense with a one-out double to center. Kristian Trompiz followed with a walk and McCall knocked both in with a double to put Quad Cities on top of Cedar Rapids 2-0.

After three scoreless frames the Bandits found the scoreboard again in the fifth. Osvaldo Duarte reached first with a bunt single and Michelena drove him home with a single into right-center to make it a 3-0 advantage for Quad Cities.

The Bandits added a run in the sixth. Roa collected a one-out single and Connor Goedert connected for a double to left to score Roa and give the River Bandits a 4-0 lead.

A three-run seventh cut Quad Cities' lead to just one run. J.J. Fernandez started the frame with a walk and Brian Olson followed with a single. Hartong plated Fernandez on a groundout to put the Kernels on the board. Luis Arraez started a two-out rally with a double to score Olson. Palacios knocked a run scoring double to cap off the frame and slice the Bandits' lead to one, 4-3.

Dereck Rodriguez (1-9) took the loss for the Kernels over a six-inning effort. Rodriguez allowed four runs on eight hits, but tied a season-high with eight strikeouts.

The Bandits send RHP Elieser Hernandez (3-1, 1.00) to the mound on Tuesday night. The Kernels counter with LHP Sam Clay (4-4, 2.83) in the 7:00 p.m. first pitch. You can catch the broadcast with Jake Levy and Lance Ragland, starting with the LLOYD Agencies Pregame Show at 6:45 p.m. on 1170 AM K-BOB, riverbandits.com and the TuneIn app.
