
Chiefs Drop Second Straight in Series Opener

Beloit, WI - The Peoria Chiefs allowed six runs for the second game in a row and lost to the Beloit Snappers 6-4 Monday night in the opening game of a four-game series. The loss drops the Chiefs to 2-3 in the second half and 42-33 overall.
With two outs in the third inning the Snappers got a rally going against Chiefs starter Sandy Alcantara. Trace Loehr drew a four-pitch walk and Trent Gilbert singled to right. Brett Siddall doubled off the top of the right field wall for a 2-0 Snappers lead.
The Chiefs came right back in the fourth inning against James Naile. Edmundo Sosa singled with one out and Eli Alvarez beat out a grounder that was ruled an error on Edwin Diaz at third base. With runners on second and third, Brian O'Keefe hit an infield single back to the mound as Sosa scored to cut the lead to 2-1. Alvarez came home on a groundout by Chris Chinea to tie the game before Naile got out of the inning.
Beloit regained their lead in the bottom of the inning. Justin Higley led off with a single off Alcantara's foot and Ryan Howell launched a two-run homer to left-center for a 4-2 Beloit lead. The Snappers grabbed an unearned run against the Chiefs in the fifth inning after a double, a passed ball and a sacrifice fly. The hosts made it 6-2 with a run against reliever Luke Harrison in the seventh.
The Chiefs rallied in the ninth against reliever Dustin Driver. Sosa led off with a single and moved to second on a groundout. O'Keefe singled to center and Sosa scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 6-3. Chinea singled to put runners on the corners and Vaughn Bryan hit a groundball to shortstop. O'Keefe scored as the Snappers forced out Chinea at second and threw wild to first base. Bryan was tagged out between first and second to end the game as he attempted to advance on the errant throw.
Alcantara (5-4) took the loss allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits over five innings. He walked four, struck out five and allowed a home run. Harrison allowed one run on two hits over two innings with two strikeouts. Tyler Bray walked a batter and hit a batter with a strikeout over a scoreless inning.
Notes... Alvarez had reached base in 27 straight games before going 0-for-4...Alcantara walked four for the third time this season...Alcantara has allowed four runs or more in all three starts against Beloit this season with a 0-2 record...Aikin and Sosa each had two hits...The Chiefs had not allowed a home run since June 8, a span of 140 innings...The series continues Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. as the Chiefs start RH Juan Perez (3-1, 2.43) against Beloit RH Evan Manarino (6-3, 2.23)...The broadcast can be heard, starting with the Pre-Game Show at 6:45 p.m. on www.peoriachiefs.com/listenlive which also has downloads for a free app on the iPhone, iPad, Blackberry and Android...The broadcast is also available on the Peoria Chiefs Network in the Tune-In Radio App.
