South Bend Cubs News Release
DAYTON, OH - Casey Bloomquist fifth start of the season was a gem leading the South Bend Cubs to a 5-0 win over the Dayton Dragons at Fifth Third Field Saturday night.
Bloomquist (5-3) tied his professional high with seven innings scattering just three base hits. The California native also tied a career high with seven strikeouts.
Cubs pitchers have now recorded 23 consecutive scoreless innings in the series. Dayton's last and only run of the series was in the fourth inning Thursday.
Donnie Dewees staked Bloomquist to a 1-0 lead in the sixth with a two-out double that scored Roberto Caro who had walked.
The Cubs added another run in the seventh inning when Josh Silver delivered a one-out RBI double to deep left center field bringing home Eddy Martinez to give South Bend a 2-0 advantage.
Then in the eighth, Eloy Jimenez belted a 99 mile per hour fastball from Braulio Ortiz over the left field fence for a three-run shot.
Dayton's staff registered the exit velocity of Jimenez's home run at 116 miles per hour. The exit velocity for Jimenez was well above the norm for Major League Baseball players.
The final game of the four game series at Fifth Third Field is Sunday at 2:07pm(ET) on 96.1fm WSBT. The Cubs will start Kyle Miller (2-1,1.35) versus the Dragons Tanner Rainey (2-5,5.30).
