Abraca-Zaba, Monarchs Tricked Up In Shootout

HARTFORD, CT - Right wing P.A. Parenteau picked up the lone shootout goal as the Manchester Monarchs fell to the Hartford Wolf Pack, 2-1, in a shootout in front of 6,636 fans at the XL Center on Friday night.
Manchester (27-26-0-6, 60 points) is in sixth place in the Atlantic Division. Hartford (32-23-2-3, 69 points) is in second place in the Atlantic Division.
"Tonight's game was a great hockey game," said Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris. "The (Monarchs) played really hard. The only goal (Hartford) scored (in regulation) was on a fluke dump in that deflected off one of our defensemen. It was an outstanding hockey game. We had some great chances to end it in overtime but I guess it wasn't meant to be."
Wolf Pack netminder Matt Zaba stopped center Oscar Moller, center Justin Azevedo, left wing Vladimir Dravecky, center Gabe Gauthier and right wing Trevor Lewis in the shootout. Monarchs' goaltender Daniel Taylor stopped 4-of-5 snipers in the shootout as he denied left wing Sean Avery, center Greg Moore, left wing Patrick Rissmiller and center Tommy Pyatt. Parenteau was the only player to score a goal in the shootout.
The Wolf Pack bit first when defenseman Corey Potter shot the puck from outside the blueline and beat Taylor at 1:05 of the first period. Zaba began the play that led to the first goal of the game as he made a pad save before left wing Brodie Dupont controlled the puck and carried it up the ice. Tied up in the neutral zone, Potter picked up the puck for the long shot that deflected of a Monarchs player and flew past Taylor for his seventh goal of the season.
The Monarchs evened the contest at 1-1 with Azevedo's 10th goal of the season at 7:55 of the middle frame. Defenseman Davis Drewiske picked up the puck in the Wolf Pack zone and carried it down the left wing boards. Along the end line, Drewiske cut in toward the net and flipped a backhand shot on Zaba. Making a stick save on Drewiske, the netminder directed the puck to his left where Azevedo was on the right doorstep for the tip-in.
Taylor (7-2-1) took his first shootout loss of the season with 23 saves in regulation and 4-of-5 in the shootout. Zaba (16-8-0) picked up his 16th win of the season stopping 28-of-29 shots in regulation and all five in the shootout.
Manchester went 0-for-5 on the power play. Hartford was 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
