Moose Drown Rivermen, 4-0
February 27, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manitoba Moose News Release
Perfect goaltending, flawless penalty killing and a powerplay goal helped the Manitoba Moose shutout the Peoria Rivermen 4-0 on Friday night to earn six out of six possible points over the club this season. Guillaume Desbiens and Dusty Collins scored singles while Alexandre Bolduc netted two in front of a sellout crowd. Goaltender Curtis Sanford earned his second shutout this campaign by stopping all 18 of Peoria's attempts.
NHL caliber goaltender's Curtis Sanford and Manny Legace started on opposite ends of the ice as the Moose and Rivermen started their 60-minute battle at the MTS Centre.
Poised at the point, Shaun Heshka took a slapshot that was deflected in by Guillaume Desbiens to open the scoring at 12:04.
Less than a minute later, the Moose benefited from their first powerplay of the game when Jonas Junland was penalized for cross-checking, but it was cut short when Dylan Yeo evened the odds with a tripping call of his own. Both teams went zero-for-one on their first man-advantage and the Moose took their one-goal lead into the second stanza.
A hooking penalty to Jason Krog a mere 1:23 into the middle frame put Manitoba's penalty killers to work for the second time. The visitors were able to fire two shots on net, but neither could break Sanford and play resumed to five-on-five.
At 16:16, the Moose earned their second powerplay, thanks to Jonas Junland's hooking fine. The home team wasn't able to capitalize on the man-advantage but they did rack up 18 shots to Peoria's 11 heading into the third.
Manitoba gave themselves some cushion room with a goal at 7:24. Greg Rallo danced around the defense and tipped the puck to Dusty Collins who snapped it over Legace for a 2-0 tally.
At 10:19 the Moose found themselves on the powerplay for the fourth time, and this time they connected. With help from veterans Jason Jaffray and Mike Keane, Alexandre Bolduc wired the puck into the net to sit on top 3-0.
In the final minutes of play, the Rivermen decided to pull their goaltender to opt for an extra attacker, but Alexandre Bolduc found the empty net to seal the game 4-0.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Manitoba Moose will close out their four-game season series against the Rivermen in a rematch tomorrow night.
