Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
Salisbury, Md. - Four Delmarva Shorebirds (40-39, 5-4) pitchers combined to four-hit the Lakewood BlueClaws (37-40, 4-5) in a 2-1 win in game one on Friday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. The Shorebirds are 4-1 on the current homestand.
Both starters, Tim Berry for Delmarva and Lisalberto Bonilla for Lakewood, were effective early on. Berry fanned six batters over four scoreless innings to start the game while Bonilla struck out four in four scoreless innings to match Berry.
The Shorebirds were first to strike in the fifth. With two outs, Michael Rooney was hit by a pitch. Then, Garabez Rosa hit a hard liner to the wall in left-center field to score Rooney from first.
The BlueClaws responded in the seventh due to three errors by the Shorebirds. With two outs, Miguel Alvarez reached on a grounder to short that Rosa mishandled. Then, in the process of stealing second, the throw from Joe Oliveira kicked into center field allowing Alvarez to sprint to third. Brenden Webb picked up the ball and fired to the plate and the ball popped over Oliveira to the backstop, allowing Alvarez to score.
Tied at 1-1 in the seventh, the Shorebirds caught a break. Rosa hit a leadoff double to left field. Then, on a sacrifice bunt towards the third baseline, the pitcher Chase Johnson threw wide towards third base, allowing Rosa to score.
In the top of the eighth, Ty Kelly threw out Cameron Rupp at the plate from left field to maintain a 2-1 lead.
David Walters entered in the ninth and gave up a leadoff single but was still able to lock down his 19th save of the season. He struck out Domingo Santana and then Miguel Alvarez to end the game.
Shorebirds starter Tim Berry allowed just one hit over five scoreless innings. He struck out a career best eight batters.
Brenden Webb and Garabez Rosa each had two hits. Webb has four multi-hit games in his last six to boost his batting average from .211 to .231 during the stretch.
The Shorebirds and BlueClaws play game two of the series on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Scott Copeland is the scheduled starter for the âBirds.
