Rome Emperors News Release
Rome, GA -The Charleston Riverdogs defeated the Rome Braves 10-8 Friday night at State Mutual Stadium before a crowd of 2,630. The loss is Rome's seventh straight and the Braves are now 1-16 in their last seventeen games.
The Riverdogs dealt a big blow in the top of the second with four runs coming at the hands of Garrison Lassiter's (1 ) grand slam to give Charleston a 4-0 lead. The lead would not last long as Rome would quickly strike back with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Chris Garcia led off with a double and later in the inning with two outs scored on a David Rohm RBI single. Robert Hefflinger followed with an RBI double to score Rohm and Hilton Richardson got in on the action with an RBI single to cut the lead to 4-3. Rome would tie the game in the bottom of the third after Tommy La Stella lead off with a double and came around to score later in the inning during a double play.
Charleston took the lead back with another four run inning in the top of the fifth highlighted by a two RBI double by Ramon Flores making the score 8-4. Rome chipped away at the Riverdogs lead with runs in the fifth and sixth innings to cut the lead to 8-6. Charleston added a run in the eighth and Rome matched it in the bottom of the inning with a Matt Lipka RBI single to make the score 9-7. Charleston added what would prove to be a valuable insurance run in the ninth inning to widen the lead to 10-7.
Rome refused to go away and scored in the bottom of the ninth on an Edward Salcedo RBI single making it a 10-8 game. Perhaps the biggest story of the night was Charleston closer Mark Montgomery striking out five consecutive Braves in the ninth inning. Two runners reached on wild pitch third strikes but the Riverdogs got out of the jam as the Braves stranded three base runners to end the game 10-8.
Scottie Allen (2-0) picks up the win for Charleston while Caleb Brewer (4-6) gets the loss for Rome. Mark Montgomery (1) picks up the save.
