Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - The Savannah Sand Gnats broke a 2-2 tie in the seventh inning to defeat the Augusta GreenJackets by a 3-2 score on Friday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium. With the win, the Sand Gnats have now defeated the GreenJackets in ten of the 12 meetings between the two teams this season.
With the game tied at two in the seventh and runners at first and second, Savannah's Wilfredo Tovar hit the go-ahead RBI single to right that produced the eventual game-winner off Ryan Bradley (0-1).
Savannah scored twice in the second inning off Augusta starter Taylor Rogers to take an early 2-0 lead with three straight one out singles. The third of those hits - a Joe Bonfe comebacker to the mound - deflected toward the first base line. Rogers fielded the ball and rushed a throw to first that went past Josh Mazzola and down the right field line to allow a run to score. An Alonzo Harris RBI groundout brought the inning's second run home.
In the fourth the GreenJackets cut the Savannah lead down to a run on Chris Lofton's RBI groundout before they tied things in the sixth. Rafael Rodriguez led off the inning by reaching on an error and moved to third after back-to-back two-out walks. With the bases full, Adam Duvall was hit by a pitch to bring home the tying run before the Sand Gnats reclaimed the lead in the following half-inning. Ryan Lollis struck out with the bases full to close the sixth as the GreenJackets stranded the bases full twice as part of a night where they left 12 men on the bases and went 0-8 at the plate with runners in scoring position.
Rogers took just his second no-decision of the season, allowing two runs - one earned - on six hits while striking out four. Savannah starter Taylor Whitenton also didn't figure in the decision, allowing an unearned run on four hits while surviving four walks in five innings. Todd Weldon (3-1) allowed an unearned run on two walks in the sixth inning, hanging in for the win. Ronny Morla struck out two in a 1-2-3 ninth inning to pick up his sixth save of the year.
The GreenJackets send Mike Kickham (1-4, 3.83) to the mound in the swing game of the three-game series on Saturday to face Gonzalez Germen (5-3, 4.22). It'll be the first of two straight games with a postgame fireworks show, presented by MCG Health, NBC Augusta and Kicks 99. First pitch will come at 7:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 6:50, airing online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
Single-game tickets are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS while further information can be found online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
