
\'Birds fall five games out with nine games remaining

Salisbury, Md. - The Hagerstown Suns (37-24) plated four early runs and held on for a 6-5 win over the Delmarva Shorebirds (32-29) at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Friday night. The Suns have secured a series win by winning the first two games of the series.
The Hagerstown Suns broke through in the top of the first inning to build an early lead. After Tim Adleman recorded two quick outs, Bryce Harper singled. Then, David Freitas doubled to the warning track in center field to score Harper from first. Randolph Oduber followed with a single to left to score Freitas to give the Suns a 2-0 lead.
The Suns added two more runs in the third inning. Freitas reached courtesy of a one out walk. Then, Jason Martinson hit a two out double to put runners at second and third. Brett Newsome delivered a two-run single to stretch the lead to 4-0.
The Shorebirds got on the board in the fourth inning. Michael Ohlman delivered a solo homer to cut the deficit to 4-1.
In the sixth inning, the Shorebirds tacked on a run on a groundout to second by Kieron Pope with Mychal Givens aboard at third.
The Shorebirds cut the deficit to 4-3 with a run in the seventh. Adam Gaylord scored on a passed ball charged to Freitas.
In the ninth inning, Hagerstown added two insurance runs to take a 6-3 lead. Four consecutive hits with two outs on the board scored Wade Moore and Michael Taylor.
The Shorebirds battled in the bottom of the ninth before falling short. Adam Gaylord hit a double to center field that was misjudged by Michael Taylor to open the inning. Then, a soft tapper up the first baseline by Webb and an error by first baseman Newsome scored Gaylord from second. Mychal Givens hit a single up the middle to score Mikey Planeta. Down 6-5, Manny Machado hit a sharp one hopper out to second and Adrian Sanchez threw him out to end the game.
Suns starter Matt Grace earned the win in six innings. He allowed five hits and two earned runs. Shorebirds starter Tim Adleman was pinned with the loss in four innings.
Reliever D.J. Ferguson lasted 4.2 innings. The Suns went scoreless against Ferguson in his first four innings.
David Walters entered with two outs in the ninth and struck out Bryce Harper.
Machado went 1-for-5 while Harper went 2-for-5.
The Shorebirds and Suns play game two of the series on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Parker Bridwell is scheduled to make his second start of the season.
