Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Savannah, GA - The Savannah Sand Gnats used a pair of multi-run innings to tally eight unanswered runs against the Augusta GreenJackets, sending the Jackets to an 8-1 defeat on Friday night. The win is Savannah's third in a row and it sets the Sand Gnats with a chance to sweep the GreenJackets in the series finale on Saturday.
For the second straight night, the GreenJackets took the first lead on the second of Adam Duvall's two doubles. His two-out, two-bagger in the third put Augusta up by a 1-0 score.
Augusta starter Gaspar Santiago retired nine of the first ten hitters he faced before running into trouble in the fourth. Savannah drew back-to-back walks off Santiago to open the inning before their first hit of the game - a one-out RBI single by Aderlin Rodriguez - tied the game at one. Blake Forsythe followed with a sacrifice fly to put the Gnats up and give Savannah a lead they didn't lose. Joe Bonfe doubled home a third run to push the Gnats' advantage to two.
The lead grew even larger in the sixth as the Sand Gnats sent 11 hitters to the plate and scored five times. Forsythe doubled home a pair, Albert Cordero singled a man in and Robbie Shields joined the parade with a two-run double to push the Savannah lead out to 8-1. All told, the Sand Gnats picked up six hits and a pair of walks in the inning.
The Augusta third was the only rough inning for Savannah starter Greg Peavey, who retired the side in order in four of the six innings he worked. Peavey (6-2) earned his second win of the season against the GreenJackets and third in a row in six innings of one-run ball, allowing four hits and striking out six without walking anyone.
Santiago (1-2) worked four innings and allowed three runs on two hits and two walks while striking out three in the loss - his second straight setback.
The GreenJackets send Shawn Sanford (3-4, 2.59) to the mound as Augusta tries to avoid the sweep. Southern Division All-Star starting pitcher Taylor Whitenton (3-1, 3.74) takes the ball for the Sand Gnats. First pitch from Savannah will come at 6:05 with pregame coverage beginning at 5:50, airing on WRDW-AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
The GreenJackets return home on Sunday to open a four-game series with the Lexington Legends. First pitch from Lake Olmstead Stadium comes at 5:35 p.m.
