CHARLESTON, S.C. - Slade Heathcott and J.R. Murphy are accustomed to racking up base hits, but the newly minted RiverDogs All-Stars tried their hand at nabbing some strikeouts on Friday. Heathcott, Murphy, starting pitcher Shane Greene and RiverDogs staff members did their part to strike out hunger by volunteering at the Lowcountry Food Bank.

They spent two hours filling 500 boxes with food for the local hungry at the Lowcountry Food Bank, which serves the 10 coastal counties of South Carolina and distributes more than 17 million pounds of food a year.

"Community outreach is an essential part of our 'Be Your Own Fan' mentality," said RiverDogs General Manager Dave Echols. "Our staff has done a great job of taking pride in giving back to our community, and we are extremely pleased that our players are joining us."

With the South Atlantic League All-Star Game approaching on June 21 at Delmarva's Arthur W. Perdue Stadium, the assistance applied by the RiverDogs is part of a last-push for the league-wide "Strike Out Hunger Campaign" and the related "Step Up to the Plate Challenge."

Perdue is offering each SAL team community a $1,000 challenge grant that is funded through the Arthur W. Perdue Foundation. The money will be awarded to each participating food bank that raises, in cooperation with its SAL team, the equivalent of 5,000 meals.

Charleston's favorite professional sports team is no stranger to the Lowcountry Food Bank. Throughout the first half of the season, fans have had the opportunity aid the needy and catch the ballgame at half-price by donating canned food items to the Lowcountry Food Bank, courtesy of the RiverDogs' alliance with Piggly Wiggly.

The Lowcountry Food Bank is a clearinghouse for donated food products that are distributed to a network of more than 350 member agencies including soup kitchens, homeless shelters and emergency food pantries.

Hunger is a reality for one in six Americans, and the Lowcountry Food Bank aims to alleviate this concern by utilizing over 25,000 volunteer hours a year (the equivalent to 12 full-time staff members). In 2010, the LCFB distributed 17 million pounds of food to 190,000 hungry children, families and elderly.
