July 3, 2022 - International League (IL)
Indianapolis Indians News Release

ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Indians dropped back below .500 with a loss to Nashville last night, 10-8. Sounds met Indians starter Miguel Yajure with immediate pressure, stringing together four consecutive singles to lead off the bottom of the first. Paired with a couple of sacrifice flies, Nashville jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one frame. The Indians wasted no time responding to Nashville's three-spot, pouring on eight runs and sending 12 hitters to the plate in the top of the second. The frame was highlighted by Rodolfo Castro's second homer in the series and a grand slam by major leaguer Yoshi Tsutsugo. Down 8-3 after Indy's second-inning burst, Nashville slowly crept back into the game with three runs in the second, one in the third and one in the fifth to tie the game at 8-8. Scoring stagnated until the bottom of the eighth, when Sounds first baseman Jon Singleton blasted a two-run home run to center field to set up Nashville's third comeback win of the series.

HALFWAY HOME: In their 75th game of the season last night, the mark of the halfway point of the 2022 campaign, the Indians dropped below .500 with a record of 37-38. Last night's loss broke a nine-season streak of the team finishing the first half of the season with a winning record, with the last time they had a sub-.500 mark at the halfway point coming in 2011 (35-37). The Indians do have a winning record at home at this point in the season and have a heavy home slate during the second half of the campaign. Fourty of the remaining 75 games will take place at Victory Field. The Indians will face Iowa, St. Paul, Louisville, Rochester and Toledo at home to round out the season, with just two of those teams currently owning a winning record on the season (Rochester and Toledo).

EVEN IT UP: The Indians are a season-low one game below .500 and will look to jump back to the even mark today in the series finale at Nashville. They have been one game below .500 (37-38) nine times this season (also: 0-1, 1-2, 7-8, 15-16, 16-17, 30-31, 31-32, 34-35) with a perfect 8-0 record to return them back to the even mark. Three of those games have been won by one run, three by two runs, one by four runs and one by six runs, outscoring their opponents 45-26 in those eight games combined.

GOOD, GREAT, GRAND: Yoshi Tsutsugo launched a grand slam to break a 3-3 tie and highlight Indy's eight-run second inning last night. It was his first career grand slam in affiliated baseball and his four RBI coming off the shot tied his career high (also: 8/29/21 vs. St. Louis). The longball was his second in as many games at Nashville and his second in eight games of his rehab assignment. Tsutsugo's been nothing short of hot for the Indians, hitting .429 (9-for-21) with three extra-base hits, nine RBI and more walks (9) than strikeouts (3). He also owns a .762 slugging percentage and impressive 1.343 OPS

HE'S GOT SWAG: With a pair of singles last night, Travis Swaggerty extended his on-base streak to 21 games, the second-longest active on-base streak in the International League. Since his streak began on 5/27, Swaggerty has hit safely in 18 of 21 games with a .325 average (27-for-83), 10 extra-base hits and 19 RBI. His hot streak extends even farther back than that, and he has reached base safely in 29 of his last 30 games with hits in 25 since 5/17. In that time, he owns a .342 average (40-for-117), 13 extra-base hits (five doubles, three triples, five home runs) and 25 RBI.

CONSISTENCY IS KEY: Kevin Newman (10 games) and Cal Mitchell (9 games) are each working long hitting streaks with the Indians, with Newman's being the longest by an Indians batter this season. More on their individual streaks are listed below:

Newman, 5/19 (1)-7/2: With a season-high three hits in each of the past two games at Nashville, Newman has now hit safely in 10 consecutive games and 10-of-11 games with the Indians this season across both of his rehab assignments. Since the second game of his first rehab stint on 5/19 (1), he owns a .405 average (15-for-37), 12 hits of which have been singles.

Mitchell, 5/17-7/1: After spending the last month in the big leagues, Mitchell returned to the Indians lineup and picked up where he left off to extend his Triple-A hitting streak to nine games. Since the beginning of his streak on 5/17, he is hitting .382 (13-for-34) with a .842 OPS. In 36 games with Indianapolis this season, Mitchell has hit .316 (43-for-136) with a .500 slugging percentage and .867 OPS.

TONIGHT: The Indians will look to clinch at least a series tie in their lone set vs. Nashville this season tonight in a series-finale 7:05 PM ET first pitch at First Horizon Park. Last year, they split the season series, 5-5, with an even record in six games in Nashville and four in Indy. In a bullpen day for the Indians, Hunter Stratton will take the mound against Alec Bettinger, who took the loss in Game 1 of the series.

THIS DATE IN 1976: Right fielder Dave Schneck homered three times to lead Indianapolis to a doubleheader sweep over Evansville, 4-3 and 2-0. He homered twice in the opener, his second shot coming with two on and two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Indians a dramatic 4-3 walk-off win over the Triplets. He then ripped a solo homer in the fourth inning of the nightcap to propel the Indians to another victory at Bush Stadium.
